Army question: at the qual. range, do you guys still shoot w/o eye protection?
-
Basic rule is you are supposed to wear it. I know at times I start with it but depending on the weather conditions sometimes it gets removed.
-
No. And as I'm usually the range NCOIC at my unit's ranges neither does anyone in my unit.
Clear or tinted, glasses or goggles, My soldiers wear one of the dozens of choices that the Army provides. But they wear something.
(I usually wear my usstandardissue Oakleys)
-
When did that start? I got out in 2000, and I didn't know I was supposed to be wearing eyes until I started reading gun mags.
-
You're supposed to wear eye protection. I tried to do so, but if they started fogging up or whatnot, I'd pitch 'em.
-
Yep. Eyes and ears at a minimum. Even in commands that allow shooting slick, eyes and ears are protected.
I tend to take mine off. It's a calculated risk.

When it's 45 degrees and raining, and you're lying in the mud with water seeping in through the edges of your Gore-Tex, yeah, foggy eyepro comes off.
Nothing is worse than being cold and wet and drawing mags from the ammo shack for a second or third time because you can't qualify because you're cold and wet. Eyepro fogging up is salt in the wound.

When did the Army start to mandate eye protection?

BTDT way too many times. Try zeroing a weapon when you can't see the targets and you need a snorkel to breathe because the water is running that deep on the lanes. Add to that a lighting strike 300m out from your firing position. Not fun.

It trickled down to the Reserves about 2006-2007. We didn't have it Active when I switched in 2000. So somewhere in there.

Thanks.
