Title: Are there any good free image editing softwares?
Post by: zahc on May 26, 2006, 08:06:31 AM
Since I reformatted my computer and discovered Open Office.org suits my spreadsheet needs perfectly, is there an equivalently good replacement for Photoshop in the open source domain?

GIMP is the best free Photoshop alternative. Not as good IMO, but certainly the best open source / free one you'll find.

Ditto what Marnoot said about GIMP. It's the closest thing to Photoshop and works very similar. If you want something lighter (closer to Photoshop Elements) and are on Windows try Irfanview.

Marnoot,

I need this, too, so I downloaded GIMP.

However, there is no .exe extension on the install file and I cannot instll it.

Gimp website says it must be compiled.

Huh?

Is this for dumb users like me?

Did you download the windows version or the linux version? If you're looking for an .exe file then you'll want the windows version - http://www.gimp.org/windows/

yeah matis it sounds like you got the *nix version. Which has to be compiled to run. The windows version has the standard .exe installer.
