Title: Thomas the Tank Engine
Post by: Perd Hapley on June 21, 2012, 01:32:35 AM
Is it just me, or is that thing really creepy?

Thomas, not so creepy.

That little bearded conductor that talks with a British accent..... very creepy.  ;)

I'm not sure if it's Thomas himself, or the narrator on the TV show, or what. I just saw a little bit of it, like twenty years ago, and have tried to avoid it ever since. Now, every time I see or hear about it, I just have to wonder how anyone can stand it.

OK, I just learned through the power of the internets that George Carlin was involved with it. Mr. Carlin is another thing I saw a little bit of once, and have tried to avoid ever since.

Yes, it's creepy.

I find it creepy as well.  Yo Gabba Gabba is a bit creepy too.  My wife has nicknamed one of the characters "love bump" because he looks like a sex toy.  I'll let you decide which one that is. :)

Ahh, the joys of having young children...

I don't know how an adult could look at that charater and not think 'sex toy' unless they are thinking 'retreiver dummy.'

Thomas creepy? You bet!
I find the helecopter to be the creepiest character. Pretty much any machine with a humanoid face on it is wrong on so many levels.

As if Telletubbies isn't the absolute creepiest.

I didn't even think of retriever dummy.  Probably because I don't hunt with dogs...

They're two they're four they're six they're eight
Shunting trucks and hauling freight
red and green and brown and blue
they're the really useful crew

All with different roles to play
Round Tidmouth sheds or far away,
Down the hills and round the bends
Thomas and friends

Thomas he's the cheeky one
James is vain but lots of fun
Percy pulls the mail on time
Gordon thunders down the line
Emily really knows her stuff
Henry toots and huffs and puffs
Edward wants to help and share
Toby, well let's say, he's square

Shunting trucks and hauling freight

I don't find them creepy, but I do find them the embodiment of eloi and a lot of things that I despise- carefree, carelessness, with absolutely no means of defense or providing for themselves.
They seem to be in a hurry to get into their underground burrow as the sun sets, Ilike to think that there is a pack of  morlocks that live in a burrow over the next hill that will hunt down any stray Tubbies out after sundown. >:D

Yeah, T the T was weird. New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh FTW. I always identified with Eeyore and his sunny disposition.

Fortunately my son is content with Curious George for his limited TV viewing time. That's a show I can deal with viewing. I haven't watched much Thomas, but I've quickly learned I can't deal with much Dora the Explorer being played.

I'm so glad that my kids outgrew that stuff.
Then it was the 'Avatar' animated series. It annoyed the heck out of me at first with the kids having the show on in the background.
Then I watched it and found it to be very good.

Sadly, the kids now like to watch Yugi-oh and Poke-man which neither seem to make any sense or have any redeeming values.

I like the old Disney short movies, preferably the ones with Donald Duck. I strongly identify with the bad-tempered, unlucky fowl. =)

Am I the only one here who had to suffer through Barney in all his purple plushness?

^^^ Now that is one cool picture, indeed.  And you could be singing 'I love you, you love me.....' as you squeeze and release.

I LOVED Curious George when I was a kid!

My youngest was just edging out of that age when Thomas became popular. I still don't understand why Bugs Bunny and his crew, Tweety and Sylvester, Popeye, and Scooby Do, can't amuse kids like they did when I was a kid. That little martian on Bugs Bunny still cracks me up every time I think of it.
Barney drove me nuts, as did the Power Rangers, which both of my boys flipped over. That stupid little yellow thing (name escapes me) that had a bunch of friends and everyone was nuts over ... not even sure what species it was ... was almost the worst. But truly the worst was Teletubbies. I just had to forbid that in my house.

Hell no! I love sponge bob! Made my youngest a Spongebob Halloween costume one year and almost wore it myself!

That little furry yellow thing. Picachoo or something?

And I love Spongebob, too. I bear a passing resemblance to Squidward.

I liked reading about Blaine the mono to Erica when she was a toddler, in my creepiest, Stephen Kingish'est voice. Therapy continues successfully. You hardly even notice the nervous ticks anymore.

My faves and the kids are Adventure Time and Regular Show. It actually is the modern equivalent of "edgy, but kids like it too" that the old Bugs Bunny ones were in the 40's and 50's.
