Title: Re-shaping a straw hat.
Post by: Perd Hapley on June 11, 2006, 10:18:50 AM
I have just acquired an old straw hat with a crooked brim.  Can anyone tell me how to re-shape it?

I'd guess that you should wet it and force it to conform to the shape you like. Use whatever is needed to form the shape. Heating the wet straw should set it.

why reshape it? bends and crooks give it character.

Back when I used to play with horses...

One of my old favorite straw hats before it self distructed has a white Resistol that had the crown crushed when I wore it though a low barn door and then was stomped on by a quarter horse after it blew off my head racing a friend across a pasture. Two years later I went to put it on and the crown popper off, tried to duct tape it but it didn't work. Had to go out and spend another $20 off the reject rack at the tack store, just didn't wear the same as the beat up hat.

Thanks, Tuttle.

Charby, there's good character and bad character.  One side of the brim bending way up is bad character.  This ain't for yard work, neither.  It's a Sunday go-to-meetin', Saturday at the zoo hat, so it needs to look decent.  It's a little fedora-shaped hat with a leather band.

This might be the Straw that broke a camels back, so think of all the camels that we are saving.

I sincerely apologize to all forum members who are innocent victims of my carelessness.  I never intended this post to be a medium for such terrible punnage.  I will lobby Oleg immediately to have this thread deleted and the guilty pun-ished.

The simplest and fastest way to re-shape your straw hat is for a horse to step on it or to run over it with a pickup.

Or is that not the shape you're looking for ...?  Tongue

He could have a camel step on it, then he would have a Camel that broke the Straw hat's back...

If it is just the brim you could heat it up over a fire and flatten it with a couple of large flat rocks.
Then you would have a Fire and Stoned Brim

Mr.Tuttle,
great link , thanks!

Hats and I do not seem to get along very well - nor for very long. Never cared for baseball style, these do not keep rain and sun of my neck.

I "had" 3 straw hats, basically Cowboy style, the Feed & Seed &Tractor Store specials.

I usually sit on them, or they get sat on. They come off out at the range, where I managed to step on them, someone else does, or the dogs decided to run off with them.

Though I have run my straights - folks , especially kids want to shoot my hat. Usually a special challenge or accompishment they do - and if so my hat is shot.
Granted there are some parents, adults, ladies I assist in shooting that want to shoot my hat with me still in it...
I have this "reporte' " with students you might say.

My last straw hat was shaped on the Interstate . Seems it flew out of the truck bed, then a 18 wheeler "fashioned" it..."Peterbuilt style".

Tip:

If the kids insist on putting onto your head the new hat they bought you, and they are being really quiet, supressing snickers, giggles, grin - not being normal...
The Adults are playing dumb and pretending to not be looking...

There is shaving cream inside the hat.

Paybacks are fun...shaving cream will "fluff up" old  seat cushions  on outdoor chairs.

Not me - I'm a good boy.

*wink*

Just don't wear your straw hat in a hurricane - otherwise you'll have "The Perfect Strawm".

Depends on the type of hat you have.

Pressed palm(no wire)...just get it wet and hold it in the shape you want.

Straw with the goofy wire in the rolled brim....bend it.
