Title: Where's Blackburn?
Post by: Lo.Com.Denom on June 15, 2006, 01:55:26 PM
Well, just noticed that he's not around, so where is he?

Don't tell me he got kicked off...

Or worse, got a social life and stopped posting! Nobody desearves that!

He is no longer with us.

Does that mean exile, sabbatical, or dirt nap?

Do an online search for his posts here on APS.  Under his username, you'll get your answer.

I see he got bounced, but don't really understand the reason.  Oh well, just another of lifes little mysteries I guess.

Well, Gewehr, I did the search, and I don't see any cause for removal.  What was I supposed to find?

IMHO he consistently detracted from the board. He was more of a liability than an asset when it came to the overall scope of APS. I can see where Preacher took offense to his last post. There was no need for it. It served no purpose other than to just spout unnecessary BS. We may all do that at times but he was a bit excessive. Too bad, underneath it all he seemed like a bright kid. Maybe that's why he lasted so long. He was given chances to cool it but never took any of them.

I should point out that here at APS, banning is very much a weapon of last resort.  I don't think we've banned more than five or six members in all the time we've been operating.  Unfortunately, some folks insist on pushing the limits right up to (and occasionally over) the line of simple common decency and mutual courtesy.  In each case, Oleg and I will discuss it, and perhaps bring in others for a broader range of opinion.  Only when there is no other alternative will someone's membership be terminated.

We'd hoped to avoid it altogether on APS, trusting our members to keep one another up to a high standard.  99% of the time, that works.  The other 1% . . .  well, that's when we have our job to do.

"IMHO he consistently detracted from the board."

HEY! That's MY job!

Looks to me like this thread was the root of all evil...

Your post doesn't mention notification of infractions, but I'll assume that took place.

The only thing I can see wrong about his last post is that he didn't put "Warning adult content on it." I don't think that in and of itself is ban-worthy but I can see how that added to many other things could warrant some admin action.

My impression of this place was an anti-roundtable, or at least how roundtable was near the end. A place where we could discuss what we wanted WITHOUT heavy moderation, where we would all police ourselves and be responsible for our own actions. This situation with blackburn on the surface seems to contradict my impression.

I'm not trying to stir up trouble, I'm just curious to find out whether my impression was wrong or this place is changing.

Edited to add: and I genuinely enjoyed his posts.

No, Winston, you're not wrong, and this place is not changing.  Oleg and I moderate here as little as possible, preferring to let members keep one another in line.  Interestingly, everyone who's been banned here (very, very few, as I mentioned before) was the subject of complaints to us by other members before the deed was done.  We trust APS members to keep a high standard here without our active assistance - most of the time, we're right.

I'm a little confused.

I tend to be a sick individual.  I'm warped.  I can swear and be vulgar with the best of them.

I saw the his post (the one linked above) when he posted it.  My first reaction was that this dude most have been drunk.  Reaction #2 was that this dude needs to go bye-bye.

If I want cheap talk, Audiworld Off Topic does the trick.

Folks, this was started because WE couldn't behave.  This site is for us to come here and talk like ADULTS.  You know, have "Grown-up" conversations.

Get you heads out of your "What about the 1st ammendment" butts.  This is a PRIVATE forum for us to come and behave and talk to others that we may not have a chance to meet otherwise.

Aside from being an idiot, what practical purpose could that post have had?  He was trying to stir up trouble.  Let's stop playing dumb.  He got what he was asking for.

LET ME FURTHER SAY- I am not perfect, and I make mistakes, too.  I am not preaching.

Ok.  Yes I am.  I'm having a bad day.  Sorry.

My two favorite banned individuals?

Masterpiece Arms.com and Lifer.

Wonderous "debaters," those two! Smiley

Well, Preach, I'm not going to question it too deeply-it may be the first and last board I check each day, but I'm not invested in it the same way you are.

For Mike in Rio Linda, I'll translate my comment:

With Preacherman's bad puns and threats of limericks, we banned Blackburn rather than Preacherman?  What were we thinking?  Smiley

There once was a man called the Preacher
A sage, a guru, a teacher
his puns made us sigh
and then made us cry
a punster's an asocial creature

I lived near Rio Linda for 10 years. Ostrich and emu farms are the big thing there.  Smells awful.

They probably would've banned Blackburn there, too.

And since he's not here to defend himself, I think we should drop it.

The Preach an asocial punster?
He's better than Herman Munster
with a bolt in his neck
who sleeps in sheep's dreck,
I'd rather the Preach
than the Munster.

It isn't that hard to get along with people. Any group of people.

If I was inclined I could sign up at DU and participate and not get banned. Even though I disagree with just about everything they stand for and hold dear. I have read their site on occasion so I know the rules and have a feel for what is allowed. It would require self censorship, but that is the price of participation.

The same holds true for any site on the web. Use a little good judgement and discernment and you can hang with any group. If you cannot get along with a particular group of folks then you should probably find a group that fits your style. Why try and jam the proverbial round peg into the square hole?

Some posters I just ignore, others I look forward to reading their responses and the rest are just part of the discussion.

Some posters feel it is their duty to point out shortcomings of a site and/or continually explore the boundries of what is permissable. These are the guys that often get dumped, the signal to noise ratio of their participation is such that they are a burden on the mods.

Ultimately it is up to Blackburn whether he wants to be a participant here, his actions will tell the tale. He knows the rules and how it works around here, if he wants to hang around he will play nice.

Edited to add: I have no opinion on whether he should be allowed to post here or not as I don't have a clue what he did to get banned.

Interesting.

How 'bout you remove all posts made under my Blackburn alias (after a half dozen unanswered emails formally requesting the same under the DMCA), and I stick to my earlier decision to not be difficult and respect wishes made. I do now know what was going on in relation to John Melvin Davis' attempted dealings with me, and it does explain a lot.
Blackburn/Blackbjorn, whomever, you're hardly in a position to bargain with the management or anybody else on this forum, especially after being banned in the first place and then re-appearing under a synonym bad-mouthing the administrators in the process.  The clue bird doesn't visit very often in your neck of the woods, does it?  How long do you think the Blackbjorn user ID will be allowed to linger here? If they don't remove your previous posts, does that mean you'll automatically be difficult and disrespectful?  Promise?

Nota Bene: We (collectively) signed up on this forum and agreed to abide by the rules of the said forum.  If the rules are violated, you might get a polite warning from the admin staff.  Keep doing the same, and you find yourself uninvited, as happened under the Blackburn alias.  Don't like it?  Start your own forum as a personal sounding board, then you can badmouth whoever you like, and use Gunkid/Hardin/John Melvin Davis of the Assault Wheelbarrow tactical mindset (now incarcerated again) as an excuse for whatever ails you.

Methinks it's time to change this forum's software to a program that doesn't let trolls post unregistered.  I'll talk to Oleg about it.  In the meantime, if anyone sees any returning troll being trollish under a new name, please let me know, and I'll do the necessary deleting.  Stinks up the place a bit if one leaves the trash lying around, don't you know . . .

Preacherman,

If the forum software would be changed, if anything would be lost in the changeover could you please let us know about that? There would be a couple of threads I'd save to my computer if anything would be lost.

Thank you.

FYI, ignoring a post means you dont respond to it. For example, im not ignoring this one, but i will probably ignore your next one. See how that works?
