Title: Obama Flight Jacket
Post by: Ben on November 01, 2012, 03:42:45 PM
I don't know how long the image will stay active on Fox News, but it is on the front page right now. Obama in what looks like an A-2, but I can't see what's on the patches other than no wings. Is that an "issue" jacket for the Office of the President? Or is he just making himself look "Commander in Chief-like"?

Before anyone brings the picture of George W up, yeah, he wore a flight suit, but he was also flying on a military aircraft, not walking around town.

I can recall seeing similar flight jackets on US Presidents going back to at least Reagan.

Nametag says "Barack Obama Commander In Chief" and I'm assuming patch says "Air Force One"

Possibly something that the AF1 crew presented to him, and previous presidents have probably received one, too.

Ah, okay, if I put reading glasses on I can actually make out the "Air Force one". I hate getting old sometimes... :)

Does he wear camo cargo pants around the WH?  There's a job waiting for him at Abercrombie & Fitch when he's done.

I hope so. And I hope the job is cleaning farts out of returned pants.

Moreover, he had actually earned his very own flight suit.

Unlike metro-pres, he actually flew planes.  I've always gotten a kick out of the "Bush = teh stoopidz" argument; Bill Whittle did a really good analysis of what it takes to be a jet fighter pilot, and "stoopid" isn't one of the qualifications.

Yup, USAF A-2.

Once he started wearing his, I stopped wearing mine.

Although, mine has earned wings on it.   =D

Everyone forgets Bush was also a pilot.

Is that a ballistic vest I see under the jacket?

Probably a thick sweater so he doesn't look anymore of a skinny dork in in the jacket than he already does.

As for him wearing it? *shrug* Who cares...

IIRC, it's the standard issue CINC leather jacket that the crew of AF-1 presents to him.

Given that it's issue from AF-1, I guess I don't really. What gets me slightly irritated is when a politician tries to dress to what he doesn't really represent or care about. Bush got hit pretty hard about the flight suit, but he was on a military flight, and as mentioned above, a military pilot, and given his respect for the military, it was something that "fit" him doing, versus say, Obama.

On the other hand, people make fun of Obama and his "mom jeans" and urban dress, but to me, that's kinda what he is and a lifestyle he represents, so it doesn't bug me. Him wearing boots and a cowboy hat to give a talk in Texas would bug me because you know he'd be trying to play to an audience and it's a style of dress he couldn't get away with. The Bushs' and Reagan could.

In the same vein, if one of the Bushs' or Reagan had tried to dress to "fit in" with some urban or enviro-green crowd (whatever form of dress that might be) they'd be overplaying their hand because you know that's not them.

I guess the A-2 just makes it seem like he's trying too hard to fit the Commander in Chief image, which he doesn't seem crazy about, versus the President image. Obama is better off in a suit representing the civilian side of his job. JMO.

It is pretty common to give politicians and even actors, a flight jacket from time to time.

When they were filming Airport 77, some of it was done at NAS North Island, the S3 scenes. During that time we presented Jimmy Stewart with a USN G1 flight jacket with the squadron patch on it, and a name tag with his wings and name.

He was so appreciative, he said that he had waited for years to get a real flight jacket that had an honest to god fuzzy collar, not like those AF jackets that had just a plain old collar.  >:D   =D

Any how, it spent time betwen takes talking to sailors that were there to support the movie and also be extras. Just an all around nice guy. I used to have a pic of us together, but it vanished in a divorce....funny how things like that happen.

Forget the boarding ladder when they take him home to Chicago for the last time. Presto, flight time!

That would be Brig. Gen. James Stewart, USAF, combat B24 bomber pilot in WWII?

The one and only. They did most of the shooting at night, when it would least disrupt the squadron operations. The only time I saw the Skipper and XO both around the hanger at night, at the same time.  ;) We seldom saw either one, much less both.
