Title: My wife is shooting right now
Post by: Fitz on December 23, 2012, 04:23:36 PM
I just watched her drill a silhouette in the chest with a 22 several times at about 15 feet. The bangs are louder now so I'm thinking they switched to the 9mm.

My friend Todd is teaching her. I'm in the house staying the hell out of the way.

Stance looked good. She's definitely not scared. Good stuff.

This was prompted by the CT shooting. Some folks call for gun bans. Other folks take responsibility for their own safety.

You do know the difference between cover and concealment don't you?

Mine just shot her dad's 1872 .50-70 that I brought back to life.

Congrats...I think.  Although, I do appreciate walking into my house with a newly purchased 1911, and telling my wife, "this old Beretta still shoots pretty good".

She was ok with the .40 cal glock, so I think we can look at defensive handguns in 9mm versus .380

She didn't like shooting it, but shot it well. I told her I'd PREFER her to get something she liked to shoot so she will shoot more

We are gonna try some 9mm guns

SWMBO really likes the xd9 subcompact

Funny enough when I took the last two women I taught to shoot shopping they gravitated to the XD9 sub compacts as well.

<< See avatar.

I've gone all-in with XD's.  I've got three of them now... the 3" subcompact, the 4" standard sized, and the 5" tactical size, all in 9mm.

I want a 4" .45 compact and a 5" .45 tactical also.  Probably have WildAlaska do the .460 Rowland conversion that he does, to the 5" .45.

I've owned an XD40, a 45 full size, and now the XD-S. I love them. If she wanted to carry an XD, i'd be totally fine with that.

She's pretty hung up on an external safety. I seem to recall XD-M's having a manual safety? But i see nothing about it on the website.

Why external safety?  All it does is prevent the thing from shooting when you pull the trigger.  Given the basic rule of font pull trigger unless you want to destroy what it is pointed at, it seems unnecessary, and in the heat of the moment, is something to forget.

I know this.

You know this.

If amanda insists on it, then it'll have to be. She wants an extra layer of protection between her gun and a mishap. I'll keep trying to reassure her that it's unnecessary, but at the end of the day it has to be what she's comfortable with.

I just picked up an XDS.  That is a sweet pistol and a pleasure to shoot.  I heard the recoil was good, but wasn't quite prepared for how nice it was.

I love mine. I got the extended mag for range use. Real nice gun :-D

That said, I think the recoil may be a bit much for amanda. But i'll let her shoot it at our range trip if she wants. Who knows, maybe she'll like it.

Good idea.

Let her try a 1911.  My wife tried all of the above mentioned guns, plus glocks, revos, Khars, and about 5-6 others.  It was only when she shot the 1911 that she said, "I like that one.  I want to buy one of those."  She shoot my SW1911 .45ACP fine, and likes her OACP sized 1911 in 9mm a whole lot.

Why did she go 1911?  All the usual common-sensical ones: it fit her hand better, she could reach the trigger easy, she shot smaller groups with it, less subjective recoil (due to the fitting issue, I bet).  My wife is 5' nothing and breaks 100lbs only when you fill her pockets with rocks.

1911 in .45acp?

One of the guns she liked the fit of was a 1911 in 9mm. If she digs the fit, we can try a few of those. One in .45acp would suit me just fine ;-) But ultimately it's up to her

1911 in .45ACP if you can't find one in 9mm or .38super (most .38super factory loads ~ 9mm and are just a bbl-change & recoil srping away from 9mm).  1911s in those cartridges are sweet, mild shooters.  My wife handles a GM-sized 1911 in .45ACP fine, but not the smaller OACP.  For that, 9mm was the ticket.

1911 is more popular than you'd expect with the gals, what with the slim single-stack grip and shorter trigger reach.  Especially when equipped with the original short trigger.

As does mine -- but I don't dare call her "SWMBO" because she doesn't like it!  =D

We now know that high-wheel Ford pickups offer neither.

Well, if you hide behind the front wheel and the engine block you can get some pretty decent cover.

There was a post from Tallpine about women urinating behind a high-wheel Ford pickup, and you could pretty much see everything. So we were chatting about cover and concealment behind those pickups in that context.

Those tall pickups don't offer squat for concealment  =D

(or concealment for squat)

Nope.  One model of XD45 has a thumb safety.

Now I remember. It was because of the bid they put in for replacing the m9 for the army

Ah.  I just sold the neighbors on getting an XD/XDM-9 compact.  Weird, never asked about firearms before, and now are very interested.  They were like the third or fourth couple in the last week to ask for recommendations.  The population is arming itself.

I love my XD9sc....when I get my CHL, it'll be my primary carry. And it's small & light enough that I don't have much need for a single-stack micro-9 or  .38Spl snub....

....but I'll probably get a snub anyway....I like snubs....
