Title: Gaak... Falling asleep!
Post by: K Frame on July 26, 2006, 08:38:38 AM
I didn't sleep well last night, and now I'm having a LOT of trouble staying away at my desk...

Any tried and true remedies?*

* That don't involve jamming a paper clip in my leg, or anything other act that draws blood?

Oh, well, I was going to post one of those "screamer" videos in order to wake you up, but I just didn't have the heart to do so.

Just think of Mtnbkr's little girl creeping up on you while you're asleep . . . they say that terror keeps you awake!

Cheesy

Coffee. Lots of coffee. While sitting in an office with air conditioning that insists that it's 102 degrees and is trying its best to bring it down to about 35.

It's what I'm doing right now. Seems to work.

I can drink an ocean of coffee and it won't affect my sleep.

Mtnbkr's daughter has been pretty kind to me lately. I guess she's just gotten disgusted with seeing me pressed into a corner sucking my thumb and whimpering...

Well, you could always fantasized about a group thing with Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno. After that, you may never want to fall asleep again...

Brad:

I don't think Mike was seeking paralysis as an alternative...

Me, I just need to keep my spaghetti lunch down, thanks to you.

Do what I do, I have a ton of sick leave I never use, so when I have a couple nights of crappy sleep I take a mental day and just nap at home all day. I found out if I don't do this that I get pretty sick and end up missing more work than just the one day.

Some of the decisions/tasks I make at work can blow/loose many years of research, so folks like me to be alert at work.

Not an option right now.

It's probably too late now but I have found that splashing cold water on my eyes till they're nice and cold is a tried and true method of waking up out of the drowsys. Got through a lot of college classes that way.

What works for me is to go run some windsprints in the parkinglot. Really pump those arms and legs too.

If you feel kind of dorky, you're probably doing it correctly.

I think I'd pay money to see Mike run windsprings. Cheesy

You could always snort a line of sweet-n-low.  I'm guessing it would cause some burning sensation, watery eyes, and runny nose that would prevent you from sleeping easily.

Coffee does not work on me until about 8-10 hrs later when I want to go to sleep.

Think about something fearful and stress-inducing, like a major deadline for a project that is not even close to completion, meeting payroll, paying taxes, potential lawsuits, disgruntled psychotic employees/co-workers, toxic mold in your workplace, etc.

I think oxygen might work, but that may not be the easiest thing to find unless you work at a hospital, medical supply company, or have a sharing co-worker with chronic lung problems.

I hate it when I doze off while preparing a document and get something like "Action or inaction by borrower which shall result in default include the followiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing"

Shalako - I like the windsprints in the parking lot idea.  Unfortunately, here, you'd be immediately tackled, shot, or chased by the police, since the only local sprinters are the ones that just stole something.  A casual walk around the block works O.K., too, and doesn't arouse quite as much suspicion.

Have you considered a dedicated energy drink, instead of coffee?

In light of my recent issues, do what I've been doing.

Embrace your sleepiness...

...and take a nap!

I think I'd pay money to see you actually spell wind sprints correctly.

Yep, in your case, it's a no-effort-required activity.

Pop up, take the shot, get the kill, and just wait for the next one. Like shooting clipped ducks on a pond...

But, what can I say, I just want to pimp your English... SNAP!

Wrt the original topic, some stuff I did to help me stay up in times of need...

Stop drinking caffeinated stuff alla' time. Now I save my Vaults and Red Bulls and Rockstars and regular sodas for when I _need_ 'em to keep me going. Not being preachy or nothin' (God knows I love teh caffeine myself), but it might help if you could most-of-the-time use other methods to ward of drowsiness and have the big chemical guns useful in your time of need.

Music! www.pandora.com is a pretty nifty streaming music player; it's free and it's 100% legal, and you can tailor your personalized "stations" to your musical interests.

Everything else I've ever tried to ward off sleepiness has been pretty much universally dead in the water.
