Title: Shrimping
Post by: Northwoods on April 25, 2013, 10:31:04 PM
Just picked up a pair of traps  legal for Puget Sound Spot Shrimp.  Season opens in a couple weeks.  Be interesting to see how it goes hauling up, by hand, from a kayak, a 30+ lbs pot from 250-350' of water.

There's a good used one for sale in Boston.  Needs a little fixing up  ;)

I think you need to add a davit to the kayak.
On second thought let us know how that works.

Yeah, and big PTO winch

All I've got for power is a 12v 9.8ah LiIon battery.  So I got one of these (http://www.amazon.com/Scotty-Trap-Ease-Roller-Mount/dp/B001M4HT84) to make it a little easier.

Actually, a down rigger would be very handy for pulling the pots.  Even a manual one, rather than powered, would be nice.  But that's quite a bit more $$.

At that depth and weight and length of line, it will be interesting to see whether you pull the shrimp pot up or pull the kayak down.

I sincerely hope that you have a friend take video and post it here after your demise.

I've successfully pulled crab pots of similar weight.  Granted from <50'.  But it's not as bad as you think.  Really.

Does the term "rig for dive" mean anything to you?

There are alternative definitions of the term "shrimping".  This isn't one I was aware of though.

I'm not sure what you're going to do with 350' of line on a kayak?

Wrap it around your neck...?  Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Not that hard, really.  Let's say when I get to the bouy they're on the port side.  Pick up the bouys and toss them over the starboard side.  As the line comes up keep feeding it over the starboard side and just let it trail out.  After the pot is up and emptied start bringing the line back in, coiling as you go.  Store in or on top of the pot.

The rated capacity of my yak is 475 lbs.  Even with me, some fishing gear (got to have something to do while the pots soak) and say 1 pot and a bunch of shrimp already on board I'd still have well over 200lbs of capacity remaining.  I don't think I'm the least bit at risk of sinking due to the weight of the pot/line/etc.

Sport limit is 80 spot shrimp per day per person.  No nets.  Pots must be minimum 1" on ceter spacing for the mesh.  Ones I got  are 24" square, 9" tall.

At 50-70 pounds per bale, that is about the weight of one girlfriend

I assume that it wasn't two ~1200# round bales  :O

About the time you're thinking it's going well. a pod of submerged orcas cruise past under your kayak and one of them snags your pot line.
Yes, a friend taking video would be good.

350 Chevy running through a Merc sterndrive. 24' converted pleasure boat. That superstructure holds a homemade winch powered by a big ol B-17 starter motor.

I was hoping it was big enough to run one of my marine engines. 24' is just a little too small.

We're shooting for bigger! Dad wants a 50 footer with diesel powe. We could handle something like a Yanmar 4 cyl diesel in our current size boat but I dont know about mating to the sterndrive or actually finding one for a reasonable cost...

I'm going to use that logic next time somebody asks us why we don't buy round bales instead of small squares

The real reason is that the small square bales are much easier to store and feed for just 2 or 3 horses.

Yeah, my engines are more typically used in 90-175ft fishing. Bottom of the range is ~1200hp, largest version is ~3400hp each. I don't think the top range, larger engines are used in fishing. I think those engines are mostly used in tugs, crew, and passenger boats.

I'm talming about fishing for Puget Sound spot shrimp.  In size they're probably closer to what most people think of as prawns.  6-10" long with the head still attached.  4-8" with the head removed.

SUCCESS!  Caught 22 spot shrimp this morning.  And lived tell about it, though with considerably less skin on 4 of my fingers.  Had a G&F cop check me out just because he had to see some crazy mofo shrimping from a kayak for himself.

Current on the way home was rough.  Took almost 2 hours to cover what took less than 30 minutes on the way out.  Pics later.

Sadly, no.

But I did just cook four of them up (2 for me, 1 each for the 2 older kids -SWMBO is highly allergic).  Sauteed a little garlic in some bitter, then put the shrimp in.  Mother of Pearl it was good!  Probably my new favorite seafood.
