A few of my (who has never received a text spam) thoughts on this story:
1) How does a spammer identify a young user who does a lot of messaging?
2) Seems that this could (as the story suggests) easily be made a non-issue by creating cellphone menus that let you only receive messages from those in your address book. Maybe I'm an old geezer, but I don't see text messaging functioning the way email does, where you may want messages from as yet unknown addresses.
3) Spammers should be tarred and feathered.
1) I don't think they target them as a user but craft the message to appeal to younger users.
2) If it gets to that point, I'll simply turn off text messaging in my account. It would be a shame though because I use text messages for work purposes (my systems send alerts and status to me in the form of a text message)
3) Absolutely.
