This sort of relates to the multitracker thread, but I thought I'd ask a separate question, since this is a much more limited issue.
I have a need to record from a tape deck to a PC. For this, I need to have something to plug that tape deck into. A USB dongle of some sort would be nice, so that I am not limited to the one machine I will be doing this with right now.
I know there are various options at various price points. What's a relatively inexpensive one that works well? Also, do these things typically require an amp, or can I just use the tape deck's line out jacks?

What type of outputs on the tape deck?

RCA jacks. It's an 80's or 90's component deck.

Interesting.

$7.99 gets you a set of L/R RCA cables to 1/8" stereo male plug.
Plug that into the mic or line-in input on your laptop.
Start up Sound Recorder and record to WAV and then use WinLame to convert to MP3.

it plugs teh rca jacks into the audio input and uses audacity
or it gets the hose again

I bought something like what you want for connecting a phonograph to the USB port of a computer and making MP3's. It's an external sound card with a built-in RIAA preamp. But it also has line-level inputs. IIRC it cost about $30 from either Amazon or B&H.
Don't ask me how well it works, I haven't found the time to use it (https://armedpolitesociety.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.thehighroad.org%2Fsmilies%2Fredface.gif&hash=f29b8eb416565cee9e175e8c487b6382c533933b)
