...is missing a fracking football game.
America sucks.
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/325933-surprises-abound-as-shutdown-begins
Not the heartbreaking story about the WWII vets at the Capitol to find the memorial closed.
Not the pending implementation of Obamacare despite a government "shutdown."
Not a devaluation of the dollar.
Nope. A government-subsidized football game was cancelled. Truly Ragnarok is upon us.

I find it hard to believe those televised games were not money makers.

What I find hilarious as that somehow they aren't automatic forfeits and losses for the schools in question.
'Cuz there's separate standards for when Stanford can't pay the bills, and FedGuv can't pay the bills.
These are just "rescheduled."
-
I just can't for the life of me see the reasoning for attempting to keep them from going to the memorial. What possible purpose could that hold!?

It makes good press to show the American people how evil the GOP is.

Ha ha, during shutdown duties yesterday, while a bunch of people were making Republican cracks, I said almost exactly what the Ron Swanson graphic said: "Best day of my career ever! It's like Christmas!". Then I started singing (to the tune of Jingle Bells), "Furlough Day, Furlough Day, Furlough all the way! Oh what fun it is to have a Furlough Day today!"
I like watching heads explode... :)

They don't have personnel to keep parks, monuments, etc. open, but they DO have personnel to keep people out.
Uh huh.

Yeah, that's been my gripe

;/ It takes a lot of people to run a park. It takes only a few to be at the entrances to turn people away. Also a lot of the parks, particularly the smaller ones, will be gates locked and no personnel on duty.

There's an epically massive difference between them being custodians of the parks, and them being owners of the parks.
Right now they're acting as owners of the parks.
The proper response is to leave the parks open, and not mow the grass or empty the garbage cans. They are still owned by the Public.

Except that the Veterans' Memorial where the vets "crashed the gate" wasn't staffed by employees until the vets "broke in". Then they had people there to keep visitors out.

Maybe so. That, of course, doesn't apply to the open air monuments in Washington, DC. It takes FAR MORE staff to turn people away than it does to "keep them open". (Also costs to erect barricades, as well.)

You wanted the shutdown and now you want to complain about it?!
Also the Wash monuments are only part of the nearly 400 other NPS facilities...
-
Then there is this Virginia park which receives no Federal funding, ordered closed by the NPS.

(e.t.a.: at first glance I misread "freebeacon" as "freebacon")

No, I'm quite happy with the shutdown, no complaints. I'm merely pointing out that the Administration is going to lengths to make it as painful as possible, even spending MORE money to shut things down that would be cheaper to leave open.
The over-reach is hilarious and it's one of the only things that makes me wish I still lived in the DC area. I'd love to storm those "Barry-cades".

The furloughs didn't go far enough. Obama and the damn Congress are still working.

You have a strange definition of "working."
;)

Uh, I was speaking figuratively. Yeah, that's it. =)

Agreed. It is like the sequester a while back. The arrogant condescension of it all is almost funny. What sort of liberal fanatic do you have to be to think Repubs will be blamed for this? Even the 5 year olds are going WTF?

A few liberal facebook friends have dumped on the republicans blaming the GOP for the shut down. When I questioned their stance by providing a few facts I got the standard name calling and personal attacks. When I called them out for name calling and personal attacks I got 2 less on my friends list. Gosh, getting unfriended is just so emotionally crushing

I heard it claimed today that Congress *has* to be paid because of the 27th Amendment. Their hands are tied! (like they really care at all about the Constitution)

I don't find that hilarious at all.
However (thinking of a parallel thread), I've been told that my sense of humour was surgically excised when I was eight years old.

Public paid for the WWII monument as well, with private donations. NPS was cut a hefty fee.

One FaceBook friend praised MN Senator Amy Klobuchar (D) for donating her pay to the NIH during the shutdown, since their funding would be reduced. I suggested that, had the Senate actually done their required duty, and passed a budget (as outlined in the Constitution), the shutdown could have been avoided. But, I also said, then she wouldn't look like such a hero.
Bastages!

Gee, does that mean she'll have to live off the millions (if she's like a good portion of the rest of the senators) she made from insider trading?

"McCain's Apocalypse" would be a great book title.

The barrycades in Yellowstone are being torn down and thrown in the ditch by the rightfull owners of the park ...Americans, who are continuing into the park.
My son went into a ranger station in northern Michigan a couple days ago to get some plat maps for the area for deer hunting. The rangers were getting ready to lock the doors. They were pissed and putting the maps outside on the ground. They also told my son they couldn't go into the Manistee Forest to hunt because the government was shut down. My son laughed at them and asked them, since they were furloughed, who was going to enforce them hunting on the several thousand acres of federal forest that belong to the people, not the federal government. Michigan DNR won't as they've got enough on their hands in the state forest. ha ha ha ha ha ha......

U.S. military academy football teams will play this weekend, despite the government shutdown.
A senior defense official said Wednesday the decision affects this weekend’s games only, and future games will be evaluated as events unfold. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.
Navy later confirmed its home game against Air Force in Annapolis, Md., would be played as scheduled Saturday. The game is sold out and is the most notable one on the Midshipmen’s home schedule. The Army-Navy game at the end of the season is played at a neutral site.
The Navy-AFA game and Army’s game at Boston College were in jeopardy after the Defense Department temporarily suspended sports competition at the service academies as a result of the budget impasse in Congress.
....
The football teams will be allowed to play because the games are paid for with non-appropriated funds, and have been long planned. Non-appropriated funds generally come from outside sources and are not approved through Congress.
....
He said the athletic department had provided information to Pentagon officials to assure them that no government funds will be spent on any aspect of the game. Gladchuk said a Navy home game brings in about $4 million from tickets, sponsorship, television and radio rights fees and other revenues such as parking and concessions. The game essentially pays for itself, he said.
Which is chump change when compared to an NFL game, but still ....
Sorry that your world will not come to an end, afterall.

If the start messing with FOOTBALL!!! it might wake up some of the sleeping masses.
I don't see much else getting the attention of the general public.
