Title: Should GM pay back the $10B loss to gov't?
Post by: AZRedhawk44 on December 17, 2013, 09:03:21 AM
http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2013/12/16/general-motors-gm-bailout-repayment/4043607/

So, FedGuv throws money at GM.  Oceans of money.

FedGuv also lets GM dodge its obligations to bond holders.  Which is absolutely unprecedented and scandalous.

FedGuv also gives unions a sweet cushy stock deal.

I say the unions are on the hook to pay back the $10 billion.

We'll see Solyndra money coming back before we see money coming back from obamamotors.

Right after they pay back the bondholders.

Agreed.

GM "repaid" by making the tracking device standard in every car.   :police:

I agree with GM on this actually.

The gov decided to buy a bunch of stock. They lost money.

Losing money in the stock market happens. Tough *expletive deleted*it. Maybe next time you won't bail out a dying company.

Except the government never asked me if they could spend my tax money on GM.

I figure I ought to at least get a 2500 Silverado with the Duramax and an Allison transmission for helping save GM...

Already own a Chevy and like it very much, thank you. 217K miles on this one and I think I can take it to 400k+...

Yeah, but what year  ???

Our Suburban was doing great at 225K until it blew a head gasket.  Not quite sure that it's right even now ...  =|

The 1989 has 204K and runs and drives like brand new, but it looks awful.

1999 Silverado.

As far as I see it, Fedgov and GM are a match. Hopefully they will go jump off a cliff together.

1999 Silverado.

I don't really want anything less than ten years old.

I think 1995 was the last year with the txfer case lever  =|

My 1995 has a transfer case level, high range a low range are mechanical.  However, whether it goes into 4x4 or not is electrical.

Mine is 14 years old. It has the transfer case lever.

Okay

You know if Suburbans are the same?

I would assume that there are some with the transfer case lever but I have only looked at a few Suburbans (Dad brought the 3rd one we looked at, IIRC, and it's a 2wd). I did see a 98 Tahoe with the transfer case lever. One of the things that does not help is I think many Suburbans were produced with the higher trim levels vs. the basic...Suburbans down here are often considered premium family haulers and purchased new as such vs. the more basic trim levels. And the upper trim levels often had the pushbutton selectors as I understand it.

'97 K1500 Suburban of stepson has push-button 4WD selector on dash.

Or I should say, had.

It blew a head gasket in the 5.7L engine, sucked antifreeze into cylinder(s), and gasped its last a couple weeks ago - made it to 240K miles.

He replaced it with a 2008 Silverado 5.3L 4WD Z71.

Sorry to hear that...

Let us know how it does. I'm researching for my next truck. We've always been partial to GM for trucks/vans considering that overall we've had exceptionally good fortune with them and excellent bang for the buck, plus I'm familar with working on them. Not a fan of the fact that they went to a rack and pinion system in '07ish, though, prefer the older style...

He said his gas mileage was considerably better than the older U-Boat.

He also said he was warned away from the 2007 5.3L Silverados, something about Active Fuel Management and valve lifters going bad.

It's a good looking truck, but too big for my tastes.  I'm 6'0", and I can't reach the box floor when standing near the tailgate - damned thing's too high.

FWIW, I'm currently sitting in a 2011 Chevy 2500 with a transfer case lever on the floor.
Granted it was sold in the mid East, but they still make them.

Same here.

I was counting the other day, and I think I've owned something like 10 Chevy's and 3 GMC's over 40+ years, including a couple of medium duty trucks.

Only two of those were new, and I ended up selling it after 18 months for financial issues.

Everything needs something fixed eventually (the GMC V-6 is hard on valves and I got pretty good at pulling heads) but the only one that I'm not really happy with is the 2006 car.

Well, like I said, GM makes way better trucks than they do cars IMHO. If I wanted a car, I would go with Ford for a "domestic" maker or Asian for an "import" (yes I know imports are often made domestically while supposed domestic is made overseas...which is why I LOL at people who go "I'm only buying American cars!" when they are sitting in a car made in say, Canada)

This was a one time special good deal, take it or leave it.   ;)

My daughter's Escort recently blew up at way less than 100K miles.  =(

The HHR was made in Mejico

N=1, but I have one of those with 95k on it, and have had zero problems.

I hope that I have now not tempted the karma gods...

GM has made some really good cars and a lot of spectacularly bad cars.
My rule of thumb is if the model of car is an analog of something offered by Buick (body/size/drivetrain), its generally ok, which tends to exclude most small cars*

*Geo Prisms from the 90s were awesome, but I think that's because their drivetrains were made by Toyota.

Funny you should mention that...Buicks are the about the only older* GM cars I see on the road frequently. Also sometimes Caprices. Seldom do I see the smaller GM vehicles out there like I see Hondas and Toyotas.

*Talking about 15-20 years, not something from the 60s...
