Title: bizarre legal question
Post by: wingnutx on September 08, 2006, 09:13:45 PM
This is about the legality of selling elephant parts.

Say, hypothetically, a person inherited a taxidermied elephant tail that his parents had got in Africa around 1960 or so. At the time there were no bans on elephant trade. Would this tail be legal to sell?

Does the person possess any proof of when the tail was err, gotten?

You could buy a new one right now.  Brand new elephant skin products are commonly available.  Go check a high-end luggage or shoe store and you'll find plenty.  Legally harvested hide is legally harvested hide.  If it were poached, it would be all kinds of illegal.

Thanks!

No proof of age, and I'm assuming that getting it carbon-dated would more expensive than it's worth.
