It's really not that bad, it's safe to read.
The short version is that the girl's parents got busted a few years back for illegally killing wolves and trying to FedEx the hides into Canada. The parents lost their hunting licenses over that. So now when the family needs to take predators on their property the three children do it under their own licenses.
The authors want you to think this is a big deal and try to make hay over it.

"illegally killing wolves" probably loosely translates as "killing dangerous predators in our back yard, like humans have done since they began walking"
Being a native newyorker I can assure you that there are a good few million people in NYC area who believe it's better for humans to be eaten/killed by wolves/mtn lions rather than kill them first. .... As long as it's those dangerous red necks that are being killed - not good peace loving socialist prison state mongers like them.
