Title: Possible IED found near Ft Hood
Post by: Balog on April 03, 2014, 12:49:21 PM
I listed it as "possible" even though reports say the cops have confirmed it is a bomb. What in the world is going on in this region?

This incident is unrelated to the shooting at Fort Hood Wednesday afternoon.

They know this how?  Does it have a note attached saying "this bomb not placed by Lopez?"

Well, when you see a note saying "I had nothing to do with this bomb. - Lopez"; who are you going to believe?

Although you were just referencing the article, I have to disagree that the police confirmed it was a bomb.

Quote
The Killeen Police Department has confirmed that an IED is attached to a truck in the neighborhood. The device has wires hanging out.

After the bomb squad has confirmed that there are explosives I will believe it is a bomb. Until then, my guess is understandable over-reaction as a result of yesterday's attack.

My reaction to all reports of CONUS IED's is that it's mistaken identity until proven otherwise. Still good to be aware of what's happening.

Story update... It's a hoax.

Or a dud.  Looking at the picture, I'd be real curious just WTF the intent was...and whether it's a distraction or the first step in trying to desensitize people in the area to bomb scares; plant enough fakes that people refuse to evac for them anymore, then bring on the real ones.

I'd also be looking at the main evac points pretty closely.  Wouldn't be the first time someone figured out that for maximum body count, you cause a phony bomb scare while the real bomb is wherever the people will be gathered to wait for the all clear.  Never could get my previous employer to change the bomb threat response to have separate rally points for each exit rather than the same, single, far-end-of-the-parking-lot point they'd been using for decades.  That meant every potentially disgruntled former employee knew exactly where all the targets would be roughly five minutes after calling in a threat, and it was just about the least secure, hardest to search (because the lot was almost always 90+% full anyway; assuming a 20-30 meter danger radius would mean checking a couple dozen cars, and you just can't start bashing trunks open with a prybar for every bomb threat...nor would any sensible security-minded person not expect that  the bomber would booby trap against just that.) place on the property.  Add in that it was clearly visible from the road, so a command detonation could be even more effective - or just a rifle if he only wants a couple of people - and it was almost the worst bomb threat response plan you could have.  (Short of handing out swords and having everyone kill each other to get it over with quicker.)

Or a dud.

Requirement #1 for a dud is there has to be something in the box that was supposed to go 'splody but didn't...

From the updated story (same link as in the OP)...

Upon further inspection from the Fort Hood EOD, the bomb was determined to be a hoax with nothing inside.

When i hear "hoax IED", I think "random box/bag/piece of trash that over-excitable cops think is a bomb, but don't want to admit that they're jumpy"

Where was that done? I was aware of the second bomb same area to catch the first responders.  Don't remember the other tactic

Don't remember the details, but a former coworker was tasked with rewriting the procedures for his site when it happened somewhere else.  Probably would have been late 60s to early 80s based on when he was doing higher-risk security work.

According to the description, the block on the far side is a cell phone.

Can't find that one now, but KXAN/KCEN has a pic of what is obviously the same device from a different angle.

It looks like one of the training aids you build from the big kit you check out from the training aid guys.

*expletive deleted*ck. what are those guys called.

I can't remember.

Anyways, I'm gonna say that some joe left his *expletive deleted*it out by mistake. They have these big kits full of fake IED components for making *expletive deleted*it.

That's what I was thinking.  They run mobilization for reservists through Ft. Hood (among other places) and they have IED lanes where they teach us to look for, spot, and react to IEDs.  As such the trainers have a crap ton of fake IED components and fake IEDs.  Barring a real threat, I'd bet one of thos guys dropped one out of his bag on the way to set up a range at 0darkhundred.  And with the hullabaloo, I'd bet he's not saying crap.

I dunno ... if I was going to hide a bomb, I would surely put it in the middle of the hood of a red pickup  :P

Maybe it was a late (and pretty sick) April Fools prank on the truck owner?

Hey, it could happen . . .

But the house "near the entrance to Ft. Hood", where the pickup truck was parked, was two miles from the gate and in a civillian neighborhood.  The guy who owned the pickup, AFAIK, was not active duty or veteran - but the guy who first saw it spent a lot of time telling everybody he sure as shootin' was a veteran.

Personally, I think the device was a warning from the Vietnamese or Cambodian Mafia - a warning to some guy who took "all you can eat shrimp" beyond the limits at a buffet.

stay safe.
