Title: Gun "Buy-backs"
Post by: Perd Hapley on May 01, 2014, 12:11:00 AM
Why gun buys work, even though they don't. This must be seen to be believed.

Ah, yes.

"These aren't the guns that are going to be used in crimes, but if you're going to complain about gun violence you have to start by focusing on the guns that won't be used in crimes or to commit gun violence."

In other words, you have no right to complain about crime unless you first sell to the police an inanimate object that has never been used and never would have been used in the commission of a crime.

Got it ...

Did anyone else happen to catch the Red Ryder BB gun in the stash of "guns" laid out on the table? 1:32

"We want you to do a meaningless gesture so you feel good about having done something about which you were not involved with in the first place and does nothing to solve the actual problem."

Yep, it's a liberal program.

Honestly, I don't even like the syntax.  "Buy back" implies that the entity doing the buying [local governments, law enforcement organizations] were the original owner.

Can you "buy back" something you never owned in the first place?

Hence the scare quotes in my title. I guess I'll call them "gun buys" (see the OP), unless someone has a better name. Victim disarmament rallies?

. . . "These aren't the guns that are going to be used in crimes, but if you're going to complain about gun violence you have to start by focusing on the guns that won't be used in crimes or to commit gun violence." . . .

By that logic, if you're going to complain about drug abuse, instead of concentrating on crystal meth, heroin, and crack you have to start focusing on aspirin, Alka-Seltzer, and Tums.

"Da stoopid, it hurtz."

That brings up an interesting point.  If guns are bad, and you can reduce gun violence by buying guns and getting rid of them, why don't we have drug by backs to end drug abuse?

Yeah, I kept a Bernardelli with a broken mainspring for a while waiting for an opportunity.  Ended up selling all but the frame for a hair over shipping costs to someone on a board looking for parts, and sledgehammering the frame into an unrecognizable lump.
