We recently legalized ersatz marriage here in WA, but a little snippet from the law automatically converts the status people in current domestic partnerships (which we had prior to full on marriage redefinition, after being repeatedly reassured it was not a slippery slope to marriage redefinition ;/ ) to full on marriage. What was that Heinlein quote about people getting what they voted for good and hard...
"(3)(a) Except as provided in (b) of this subsection, any state registered domestic partnership in which the parties are the same sex, and neither party is sixty-two years of age or older, that has not been dissolved or converted into a marriage by the parties by June 30, 2014, is automatically merged into a marriage and is deemed a marriage as of June 30, 2014."

Specifying that it applies to same-sex couples only raises the question of whether they allow domestic partnerships for opposite sex couples, and if so, why those are exempted, and of course, if they don't, then why does the law specify?

They do allow hetero domestic partnership.

They do allow hetero domestic partnership.
Question would be why wouldn't hetero domestic partnerships automatically become a marriage?

This is part of the bill for SSM, so I imagine the policritters just threw it in there without thinking about that.
I'm wondering if the geezers will sue for age discrimination based on the under 62 part. >:D

I would hope that they would jam it up the 62+ crowds fourth point. The reason that they didn't is that it would reduce their SS benefits. Thereby ticking off a voting block, old lesbos.
