Title: The APS pirate hunting vessel hath arrived
Post by: Jamisjockey on February 03, 2015, 04:24:38 PM
Or, why I have the strangest erection right now

http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1996/Lockheed-Martin-Swathboat---Support-Vessel-2547074/San-Diego/CA/United-States#.VNE7XLktHcf

If'n I were stupid rich, this would make the perfect platform for a global expeditionary boat.  So much deck space for a hot tub, helo, and some support boats like a nice center console and some RIBs.

Oh my.  So very much.

Picturing it with a couple nice boats on the rear deck. Would need a stronger crane installed for them.

Looks to me like it's a bit more of the "Hard hats and testing stuff"-Navy, than the "Blowing stuff up"-Navy.

Pirates can be dealt with with small arms.

Pirates can be dealt with with small arms.

I'm thinking a 80mm mortar running Audrino controllers that's tied in with a laser rangefinder from the bridge, is running on mounted servos, and has a wave compensation and deck attitude adjustment system using COTS accelerometers/gyros like the ones they put in Wii controllers and cell phones.

Then all you need is the needed number of propellant charge discs and drop it in the tube when the controller beeps it's ready.

I want goddamm 16 inchers in a triple turret.   I want them to not even hear it coming from 26 miles away.

And a CIWS for close in.

Hell, I'd settle for 76/L5 or whatever the current deck gun is these days.

It they are within small arms range, then so are you.

And AJ, there's a reason mortars are NOT used on surface ships.

Yeah, and throw in some torpedo tubes for the motherships...

Why?

http://pcf45.com/misfire/mortar.html

And more modern... seems like I was dreaming up the poor man's version of this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LfWKfCaIiM

I was mainly thinking of mortars as it seemed like the heaviest weapon and ammunition we could get, through er... "non-traditional channels".

Yeah, I see she has stationkeeping, so she likely did a lot of ROV ops, "recovery" ops, and various secret squirrel stuff. You wouldn't use a boat like that for standard "hard hat" stuff.

I don't like it. I guess I'm too much a traditionalist.

How about a nice Coast Guard cutter? It's available, too.

maybe this is a stupid thought (I don't know anything about ocean going vessels after all)

but with all the varied expertise on this board, can't we install our own selection of special boomy present delivery systems?

Would make a hell of a globe trotting platform.  Those catamaran style boats can take some serious seas

That things got close to 8000hp of drive engines. Bet it moves.
11k gallons of fuel might not get it far especially with the other 2 generators.

Lots of teeth.  But no helicopter.  BTW, anyone ever hear from Leatherneck?  Wasn't he our resident chopper pilot.  (although if we did get helo and pilot, then we need folks to maintain it, get parts for it.  One more logistical nightmare for His Majesty of Sealand's Royal Navy.)  Maybe we could glom onto the EU and do un-rep's from NATO.  =D =D

Guns, missiles and torpedoes.  That should be enough.  And a completely misfit crew.

It's even got a barge to make "other" re-supply runs to the coasts of countries that might not let us in....

I have been wondering what became of Leatherneck. I miss his very informed and informative posts. I hope he's all right.

His last post was March 08, 2011, 08:06:43 AM. I really miss him. It would be great if his son, would join this forum as well.

That one would for sure, with the SWATH. Some of the aluminum cats, while stable, tend to crack at the welds if exposed to a lot of short period chop.

No Gunz and only a 300nm range, which might work if we're hunting the pirates of the Caribbean.  ;)

Many modern luxury yachts have been retrofitted off of military patrol type platforms.

http://www.boatinternational.com/yachts/the-register/top-20-expedition-yachts/

6, 8, 9, 10, 14, 16, 18, 19, 20

What struck me about one of the custom ones was that it has it's own landing craft for putting the owner's 4x4 ashore.
Hhhmmmm.... >:D

Oh and there is just something sexy about old ships and their lines

Maybe I'm just sadistic, but I'd prefer to just be able to launch a fleet of these (http://www.tampers.eu/-lectric-Tourist-submarine-2-person-for-Sale.html) equipped with various attachments to quietly hole their boats miles from shore.

You don't really want to keep ramming a ship even with an ice breaker.  Ice breakers are designed to ride up on top of the ice and break it.  You would have to make modifications to the bow for ramming.  You'd be better off designing a ship, from the get go, to ram stuff.  Sorry to be a wet blanket!

It wont get high centered on something like that.  It will screw up the bow of the ship though.  At about 1:15 in the video is a good shot of an ice breaker at work and you can see why the bow would get messed up by repeatedly ramming another ship.  If I was going to build a ship to ram stuff it would have an actual ram.
