Title: What caliber for giraffe?
Post by: MillCreek on April 29, 2015, 11:04:59 AM

That I can carry in my bicycle handlebar bag?  I am thinking that my .380 or my .38 is not going to do much but annoy a very large herbivore.

Mare's Leg in .45-70 Govt?

Snubby Alaskan in any of the big bores?  (Just watch the muzzle flash so you don't set the savannah on fire.)

Are we talking standard-sized giraffes, or one of the toy breeds?

A .30/06 is considered marginal for giraffe . . . but it's on the right side of the margin. Be aware that the vitals (like lungs) are higher up and farther forward than you'd think, relative to the anatomy of other plains game.

You have to do some serious stuff to get that ban stick.  :police:  So how is the frozen tundra of the north?

Not so frozen. Warmest winter in recorded Alaska history. I got maybe 11" snow total.

Interesting.  Here in Cincinnati we got 47.5" this year.  Is there permafrost that far down ir to you have to go further north for that?

No permafrost in Anchorage. Gotta go 2-3 hundred miles North for that. Some cold snowless years here the ground freezes to 10 feet, but this year I doubt it got a foot.
47.5? Friend of mine that lives in Buffalo claims he had 8 feet in his driveway this year. Says he's can't take it any more, moving to Texas =D

That 8 feet was after 5 foot melted in a Nov. thaw. I get a kick out these weather reports from the NE while I bask in Alaska sunshine. =D

I grew up in the snow belt in NE Ohio, so we would get quite a bit of snow.  All my friends back home were saying how bad the snow was this year as well.
