Considering another holster+belt+ammo carrier rig. This time for my full-sized all-steel 1911.
Likely will run with El Paso Saddlery again. All black leather. Thinking of running with some sort of stamping. (All my current gear is smooth or boned.)
I was wondering what the APS collective wisdom and aesthetic sense would prefer: basketweave, border, or fish scale?

Personally I hate stamping and would stick with boned. But if you must: Border.
Basket weave and Fishscale both look (to my eye) like Paul Blart's duty gear.

I've never seen fishscale stamping. All the PDs around here require basketweave.
I prefer plain. If that's not possible. border stamping is tolerable.

I agree with the above. Less stamping is better to my eye.

I'm with them three guys above me. I much prefer plain, but if I had to choose between the three examples, it would be the border.
If somebody told me that I had to make a gun/holster combo look snazzy, I would look to a plain holster and putting fancy (but practical) grips on the pistol. I think that has better eye appeal, and if I decide I don't want to be fancy anymore, I can easily swap grips. Once the holster is stamped, you're done.

Border is sharp looking. Less is more, IMO when tooling leather.

I would say it depends on how and when you expect to wear it. If it is a daily wear, or frequent wear I would go with the border, it looks good. For occasional social gatherings I would go full tilt with the fish scale, not as common as basket weave. I had a complete Ranger style holster/belt/horizontal mag pouch made and it is mostly basket weave that I wear for social occasions.

eta crappy picture. This is a basket weave with a scalloped (?) border. Interesting note is the metal parts are engraved by residents of the DOC in Texas and the moneys raised goes into a welfare fund for families of Texas Rangers injured/killed on the job. At least that is what he told me. ;)

No. Enough with all this Southwestern cowboy flair. It straddles the border (no pun intended) between tacky and downright flamboyant. Be a man. Eschew the pretties.

But...but...some of us may have actually grown up as cowboys, you know the whole bull riding rodeo cow tossing deal. It may seem normal to us and we wonder why someone would want to be plain like those folks from the midwest. ;) :)

I like basket weave, but it screams 1980's Bianchi cop commando.
Most of my leather holsters are plain brown halter leather.

No snaps and no stitches. It is a folded-leather thingy made from one piece of leather secured with 4 rivets and a tension screw.

The back side of mine is the same, except not so large a center blind female screw dealie and the the blind female screw dealie on mine is made from brass not white metal. Mine is superior (IMO, and likely newer design).
In use large aperture requires a 1.75" wide belt and the small a 1.5" wide belt to both work and not be sloppy. Also, if using a 1.5" or slimmer belt, run it in the side, over the maker's mark, and back out the side. I did not appreciate this at first, but it makes it pretty solid for both 1.5 and 1.75 wide belts. (A previous review of mine had faulted it for use with a 1.5" wide belt.) Also, takes up less real estate on your belt line than most double mag pouches and is thinner than most. Maybe not so good for gun games, but better for toting with a CCW.

I also did not appreciate it had no stitches until you asked. A rather elegant design, now that I take the time to examine it.

Me too, if I every decide to get a BBQ gun, the holster and belt will be floral to match the engravings.

Add a vote for border. Don't know why, but the others make me think "cheap" when I see them. But, I also like the we border style of engraving on handguns as well. Blued with wood grips, of course.

Pardon my iggerance, but searching "boned leather" did not help. What is that?
At first I thought it was a misprint and OP had used it instead of "bordered," but someone further down the thread used "boned" the same way, and differentiated it from "bordered."
I've made a couple of utility-stopgap holsters and some other things out of leather, but was never really into leathersmithing, so forgive my dumbity.

Makes sense, after all. I actually have one like that (Kydex) which I don't use because it takes a fork lift to get the gun out of it. Came with the gun.

Went to another SASS shoot yesterday and someone had a basket weave holster, I liked it. Mine has an oak leaf pattern. Got it from here, http://www.indiancreekleatherco.com/IndianCreek_holsters-western.html
