Title: We geniuses need our alone time
Post by: Perd Hapley on March 22, 2016, 04:19:01 PM
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/03/18/why-smart-people-are-better-off-with-fewer-friends/

Quote
First, they find that people who live in more densely populated areas tend to report less satisfaction with their life overall. "The higher the population density of the immediate environment, the less happy" the survey respondents said they were. Second, they find that the more social interactions with close friends a person has, the greater their self-reported happiness.

But there was one big exception. For more intelligent people, these correlations were diminished or even reversed.

"The effect of population density on life satisfaction was therefore more than twice as large for low-IQ individuals than for high-IQ individuals," they found. And "more intelligent individuals were actually less satisfied with life if they socialized with their friends more frequently."

This explains so very much about my reclusiveness. [smug emoticon]

Alternate hypothesis: Stupidity is contagious.

Truth. The bigger the group, the lower the aggregate intelligence.

Alternate hypothesis: you socialize less because your B.O. has reached such epic proportions that you have fewer opportunities to socialize.  >:D =D

Somebody once told me that bright people join Mensa.  Very bright people join Mensa Squared. But very, very bright people join the Rotarians, the church Glee Club, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Terry, 230RN... IQ about a third of that.

Smartest guy I know, well his welcome mat says, Welcome.

If you know him, bring scotch.

He is an extreme introvert that battles depression, but he holds his friends very close.

Yeah.  Looking at that tonight with "fresher" eyes, I see the poor construction.  The mat at our front door is just like that map.  That is NOT a picture of our front door.

Happy now?   :P

I must have 100 pictures with my feet in them.  You'd think some computin' engine guru could write a foot-recognition program to automatically crop them out.

Clarey has a book called the curse of a high IQ...it's...amusing, but deals mainly with the +2-3 sigma group.
His comparison (valid) is average : +2-3 sigma :: Forrest Gump : average.
His points are really not valid at the 4-6 sigma range, as there really isn't a valid syllogism.
Average : +4-6 sigma :: IQ of 10-40 : average.
Since that low level isn't really "person" any more, the comparison in terms of describing the interaction breaks down.

Everyone I know in the 4-6 range I think is LESS frustrated with average people, as they are smart enough to realize -everyone- has somethi to add, and then just interacts as appropriate, and puts the other 80-90% of clock cycles to something else.

Speaking personally, I find +2 sigma folks -more- frustrating than average...as +2's are neck deep in the bad part of the dunning-Kruger effect, while average folks and 3-4 and more sigma have realized what they don't know.
Also, why be an introvert, learning super fast means the more different people you interact with, the more you can learn.
