The dang hipsters have discovered MREs. I predict prices will go up. Luckily I generally just resupply every five or so years, so maybe the fad will expire by then.

The odor combination/conflagration of patchouli+MREshitz is something I contemplate with horror.

The MREinfo.com site is really interesting. Going to look at that one in depth later on.

It's a great site. I use their reviews to pick my MREs.

See my earlier comments about "hipster-neocon," and words that have lost all definition.

I can't wait to see the snivel-fight over who has the most authentic MREs, followed by one of them doing an 'unboxing' of some 80 year old K-rations.
-
Back in my EARLY teens we ate C-Rats on the deer stands...

Yeah, I don't think anyone who uses patchouli would be caught dead anywhere near an MRE.

One of the few advantages MP's had over other units were we were on Separate Rats since we work 24 hour shifts and our soldiers weren't always able to make it to the mess hall for meals. and when we were out in the field, we're constantly out on patrols the various MSR's we could always find an Imbiß. Most MRE's were either thrown away or returned to garrison un-eaten.

While the cheese and crackers aren't bad, MRE's are not something that classify as something I want to eat.
Also, single fathers who think their little girl and her BFF, who is staying the night, should be given MRE's for dinner are kind of jerks. :P

The old crackers were great, especially with cheese. That off tasting wheat bread in them now is terrible.

I haven't had one since the mid 90's, so I wouldn't know.

Maybe he was just looking out for your nutritional needs.

Good they can have them, much tastier choices out there.
Hopefully they don't discover chef-boy-ardee.

In all fairness, me and Pary were pretty rough to handle. You never met two wilder girl children and poor Hussan got the bulk of parental oversight since my parents smartly dictated that Pary could only stay over during summer, when they could stick us outside, in a tent.
Then again, my parents were the ones who ended up doing the camping trips...

Psssst! Hipster! Come here. Wanna know how to get MRE's for FREE!!!? Just sign right there, and I'll hook you up.

It depends; did he also have you out on patrols all night?

My first drill in the reserves in the fall of 1983, I was issued a C-Rat from either 1951 or 1953, I disremember the exact date, but it was from the Korean War and more than 30 years old. It was slightly off-putting, and my fellow soldiers had me open the tins in mine first, kind of a right of passage, as I had been issued MRE's in Basic and hadn't had a C-Rat before. The original MRE's weren't all that hot either.
Is it wrong that I hope they get some dented cans, and that botulism wipes them out ?
-
I have a couple of cases laying around, I've been trying to eat through them because some were pushing 5 years old.
They all have been edible but I hate that cheese spread. I really don't like anything with a fake cheese flavor so thats just me.
I usually take them to work and eat them for lunch. One of the guys I work with has the same overstock problem, so we do it as an mre lunch day and compare notes.
-

No. He just threw the food at us and hid in his room until dawn.
-
I have a few cases. maybe I can drop them on some hipster site and make some cash

I like most MREs. Just don't put an omelet in a bag. I miss the old ones some, get into those as a kid since BiL was 1st Armored. I liked the old crackers, the freeze dried fruit, and believe it or not, the freeze dried pork patty. Still looking for more Italian field rations. The one I had was pretty great.
-
The pork patty?
Holy hell, that was Satan in a bag...
-
...freeze dried fruit...
Loved the strawberries.

I couldn't agree more. The first MRE I ever ate was the pork patty and I didn't have any hot water for it so I had to eat it straight from the bag. It was horrible.

stored properly, and rotated FIFO, MREs are worth having around. They make a great lunch when camping or hiking. I buy the components, and put together my own choices in baggies.
Something like this

You're such a hipster...
-
The C-Rats we were eating were eaten back in the late 60s/early 70s at the latest so they were fairly "fresh."
-
YouTube has a guy who's channel is all about finding, collecting, reviewing and taste-testing C/K/MREs. Interesting watching.

"The oldest peanut butter ever eaten" The guy is certifiable. God only knows how much money he spends getting these things only to ruin the collector value eating stuff that could KILL him!

You're such a hipster...
and you continue to be almost beyond belief. :)

IIRC he's from Earth #2145, at least going by the Heisenberg quantum-parallel index.
Pretty close to ours up until 1939 where it split off, Vichy France, aided with the Merovingian ascendency went full on Nazi, and held out in their colonies until 1963, and Mao wound up fighting along Chang Kai Shek, and the nationalists. We broke the codes in time, and met Yamato full-on in the Pacific, instead of being waylaid in Pearl Harbor. But lost Midway, and wound up using Little Boy on the Philippines, and then Fat Man on Tokyo.

Interesting that it uses the date MREs are issued as a tracking method.
