It should have phoned home by now and has not.

Didn't they also bounce that Comet (or was it an asteroid) lander into a crack and not get any data from it either?
(And the article mentions a earlier attempt to land on Mars in 2003 by the ESA that also failed to land properly. *Note to self* Do NOT volunteer to be an ESA astronaut, they have the "Not blowing up on launch" thing down pretty good, but they haven't quite yet figured out how to stick the landing...")

*Note to self* Do NOT volunteer to be an BSA astronaut...
Now THAT would be quite a merit badge.

Yeah...They did get some data out of it, though; there was enough battery power to last for a day, so they managed to get some images before the juice ran out.

And their orbiter managed to get a picture of the lander sitting in the crack just before the orbiter whacked the comet.

To be fair, the orbiter whacking the comet was actually planned...
-
One of my coworkers was on a team with my company that participated in whacking a comet with a probe back in 2004-2006 or so. Pretty nifty stuff that she shared from the telemetry.
Ah, here we go. Deep Impact. Sounds like a disaster movie... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Impact_(spacecraft)

This is true. It was a pretty slick mission, aside from the lander accidentally setting down in a crack in the comet.

Better than 1/2 MOA accuracy, huh?

Inflight corrections help.

Yeah, it's not like they threw the dart from six thousand miles away and hit the bullseye.

The Lander is apparently a pile of debris. The ESA thinks that the landing parachute was jettisoned too early and the retro rockets turned off too early.
-
ESA's Director General, Jan Wörner, said Schiaparelli's primary role was to test whether they could successfully land a probe on Mars.
Well, I guess they answered that ...
It takes three strikes before you're out. They have one more try.

Am I the only one that experiences a bit of shodden-froyd (or is it shodden-frode? shodden-frowd? ???) when "Europe" fails at pretty much anything?

At least they are trying unlike us, who have all but quit the game.

???
So... our ginormous nuclear powered rover with a rock-zapping laser that was lowered on cables from a rocket hovering platform doesn't count as "trying"?

Schadenfreude. I think......... [popcorn]

We haven't quit. NASA is doing wonderous things in Global Warming Fiction Research and Muslim Outreach.
-
They had better send Matt Damon to mars to fix it.

Seconded!

OK, shodden-froyd-uh. Got it.

"That's what she said."
Terry runs and hides.

So the lander built by socialists crashes and burns and the rover built by capitalists has lasted 12 years past its planned mission time!
Ok I realize that is a bit of an oversimplification, but makes ya think ... why do we keep wanting to emulate Europe?

The first pictures of the landing/crash site are in.

Is Matt Damon all right?

That little black dot makes me think of this:
