According to this article back in September there had been 71 "celebrity" deaths which was 5 - 20 more than any other previous year of the study.

My guess is that is simply Baby Boomer Odds.

Problem being that some of these are in their early to mid 50's such as George Michael.

Yep. You ingest the crap that Carrie Fisher and George Michael ingested regularly and no matter what your age is, you've increased your chances of early death SIGNIFICANTLY.

Liz Smith also died (Christmas Eve)!
She was a wonderful British character actress.
She had roles in at least three adaptations of A Christmas Carol, including both the George C. Scott and the Patrick Stewart versions.

For some people they are "family." You grow up and "connect" with certain celebrities for various reasons. When they pass on, it is as a part of you has died.

I agree with you , mostly.
Entertainers certainly, and while not family, the pleasure of their performances will still be missed.
Of course there are plenty of "celebrities" and "entertainers" that have passed this year that while taking no pleasure from their passing I surely will not miss them.

You don't admire certain people based on their well known actions, talents or impact on the world stage? or would ever possibly be sad that that person won't continue to contribute?
I'm not particularly attached to Carrie Fisher, the person, however I am incredibly bummed that she won't be making any further appearances in a movie series that I really like.
Plus, there are certain writers who are getting up there in years who have yet to explain and expand on the Pandora's Box that THEY BROUGHT UP and have yet to finish writing about that I may be forced to resurrect should they kick the bucket. (*cough cough* Mercedes Lackey *cough cough*)

I happen to agree, in fact just this week there was a plane crash that claimed the lives of 92 Russian (mostly entertainers) military, media and others and there was hardly a blip on the radar. I think that bothered me the most, even though they are Russians they are still victims of a military accident. I guess my sentiments are not quite the same as many peoples, especially those who live and die by social media. :(

Yeah, I couldn't believe that when I hear it on the news. I was confused (not unusual for me) because hey were "obitting" both of them at the same time. Friggin' amazing and saddening. I didn't know much about Carrie, but her mom was a favorite of mine in my youth.
And on that Russian crash, mostly members of the Red Army Ensemble... Familiar with them because one of the first "Audio Fidelity" brand* vinyl recordings was of their group, and Russian or not, they were great.

* Ultra high fidelity, monophonic, and I had the audio system to be able to tell the difference. Even better than the Mercury brand recordings. I used to whistle along with the whistler in "Kalinka." Those were the days when I started to realize that the Russian cultural heritage (literature and music) was so similar to ours, but "darker," and that our real enemy was their political system, not the people.

It turns out Carrie Fisher's tox screen at the time of her death showed cocaine, methadone, MDMA (better known as ecstasy), alcohol, opiates and "an exposure to heroin."
