Title: more fatal firearms stupidity
Post by: griz on June 29, 2017, 08:10:15 AM
http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/29/us/fatal-youtube-stunt/index.html

A couple wanting more Youtube viewers films a stunt where he holds a book over his chest and she shoots him.  Didn't work as planned, she is charged with manslaughter.  They have a child and another on the way.  How do you explain that to your kids?

Through a telephone. From the other side of the glass.

Not just any gun, either. It was a .50 caliber Desert Eagle.

The book was an encyclopedia. I think the guy should have spent more time reading it and less time shooting it.

Good point.  I don't know if the (likely) conviction on a charge of manslaughter is a DQ for parenting or not.  I know a couple who fosters kids, mostly babies.  They had one for the larger part of a year, were talking about adoption and everything.  The birth mother got out of jail, was drug free, and had turned her life around (again).  They gave the baby back to her.  Ouch.

Actually, that's a good thing. And often the goal.

Regarding the DQ for parenting.   If mom is in jail, unless there is family willing to take the kids, then into Foster Care they go...

Not that there weren't plenty of Desert Eagle penetration videos around before they tried it.

Desert Eagle penetration videos
I dare you to search that.

From an article on this it sounds like they had tried it already and the bullet stopped in the book. I wonder if the reason it stopped on their test was that perhaps the book was unsupported and flew back when hit. When it had a backstop it was able to punch through.

The guy showed her a different book that he had shot before where the bullet didn't go all the way through.

In my head I'm thinking that he shot that book while it was standing free while she shot a book that was firmly held in his hands. The free standing book would have acted differently to the bullet strike.

Sorta like elastic versus inelastic collisions, but I have to work that out in my head a little better.

But it is a serious subject, after all, graveyard and election humor aside.
