Title: Forum had some problems
Post by: RevDisk on August 15, 2017, 10:44:26 PM

Absolutely no bloody idea what happened. Tried a bunch of things and upgrading PHP solved the issue for now.

May have to try the upgrade to SMF 2.x sometime soon. Last time that did not work out so well. Backups are flowing, so we should be good to try again. This time the proper goat sacrifices will be made. Pigeons apparently did not cut it last time.

Some issues are still ongoing but basic functionality is restored. Working on it still. Hence potential emergency upgrade to SMF 2.x

Yeah, I know RevDisk is offensive, and says a lot of objectionable stuff, and he's not even a real conservative - but he's the only one that can make APS great again.

Same here.  Login doesn't work correctly, no avatars, and the green bar of nothing is still present.

I had to relogin this morning, but it worked, at least, unlike for other people.  I can see all the avatars of the people who say they can't see theirs, so take that for what it's worth.

I'm still getting blank pages after posting.

I'm still getting random, weird errors.

Check that. I'm now getting regular page loads after posting.

So that's on the mend.

Was forcibly logged out yesterday, and not able to log in.  Am in now.

And it looks like quoting works.  No "session error".  And I see my profile pic.

NOTE: I'm finally fully on the new HP Notebook and liking it. It's lighter but has more RAM, 8 gig, and 2.25x bigger HD (2TB up from .75TB).

The Green Bar of Loading is still around, but that's only a minor annoyance.

It might depend on how you quote. When I'm reading through the thread, and hit the quote button on one of the posts, I've never had a problem. When I hit the reply button, and then scroll down and hit the "Insert quote" button on one of the posts, I've been getting the dreaded Green Bar of Doom more often than not (since whenever this started months and months ago).

For me, I can just pic a post and click "Quote" and I get the GBoN. Strange. Does the same for me on IE 11 and Edge as well, and those are new, clean versions that have never been to the site!

I will typically (like right now) middle-click the quote button to open a reply in a new tab.

No problem at this point.

Firefox on Linux.

Rev,

Thank you for your work on this. If I can be of any help let me know.

My 'work' is solely yelling at support. "OY. I DIDN'T CHANGE NOTTIN. YOUR PHP IS BORKED. FIX IT."

Legit, I have only FTP and indirect sql access. As someone who is used to having root, this is mixed. On one hand, I don't have to do any real work. On the other hand, I can't do real work.

If I left click, I get a pop up with a bunch of options.  I select "open link in new tab", and continue on as I'm doing right now.

Someone's got to do the yelling.  Frustrating not having the tools to do it right, though.

The PHP stuff aside, I think the spam header entries are corruption of the forum code as opposed to something within PHP or Apache.  At least, they are not present if you hit the forum PHP files incorrectly.  For instance:
http://armedpolitesociety.com/Sources/Karma.php

If you go there it (correctly) dies on line 25 because the PHP file has been called outside of the forum structure, but when it outputs the error message it doesn't show any of the header entries.

Of course, if the site remains unsecured against the intrusion then fixing it doesn't really help long term.

Do they simply NOT allow the site IT admin(s) Forum admin console access? If not, why don't we move to a site that does?

Oleg owns the forum. He already had one site stolen from him and I'm certainly not the type to do so. If he wants to stick with the current provider, that's his choice. Considering the size and material of his other sites, cost and political consideration are not minor consideration. He also picks up the tab, but that's pretty incidental for the size of this forum. It's a rounding error compared to his photo site.

I'm NOT suggesting stealing it! I'm just wanting it to continue to be a forum that people will be happy to frequent and proper maintenance is part of that. If he can't get proper care where it is, why not move it WITHOUT giving up control/ownership?

*shrug*

Not saying that you are suggesting it. Just that he semi recently had a domain stolen so is probably a bit gunshy of trusting server techs. Whatever the reason, it's his business. I suspect there's good reasons. Oleg's not an extremely technical person. Current place apparently does well enough for a good price and doesn't yell at him regarding the content. But that's just my guess.

I think there are more "escort" links now than there were a few days ago.  (can't figure out how to copy/paste from the Developer Tools screen)  No idea if that really hurts anything.

The <code 4282> links are still there, but I don't remember seeing the <code 4281> and 4280 sections before.  But maybe I just didn't open them.

I am very familiar with the issue with Oleg's domain but this place needs help. People with the backgrounds to help have offered their services to assist. I am one of those people. This is the place I call home and is pretty much the only forum, besides the ones I manage that I visit and participate in every single day, several times a day minimum. I do not want to see it die.

Your offer is appreciated, Hog. But we're good. We have plenty of resources. Trust me, I'd rather we use a dedicated server with full access. Nick and I haven't been thrilled about the setup. It's akin to working on an engine solely through the tailpipe. But it's ultimately Oleg's choice. If he is happy with the level of support and whatnot, it's his call.

Again, we're not going to overthrow the regime and stage a coup.  ;)

But you can understand why Oleg would be gun-shy about giving root authority to his admins again, even if he does trust them.  Trust only goes so far after incidents like "The Great Unpleasantness."  Right or wrong, I can't blame him a bit.  =|

Yeah, I was there for that. Abandoned the site once it was all said and done and Oleg lost. There HAS to be some legal document/contract he can come up with to protect himself AND take some of the responsibility off his shoulders. But, yeah, I understand where he's coming from.  :old:
