Title: Better high speed internet!
Post by: RoadKingLarry on October 11, 2017, 11:26:36 AM
My fiber to the home internet was installed this morning.
I opted for a 100Mbps service. Previous service was a 3Mbps DSL service.

Ethernet connection to the router I get 109Mbps down and 112Mbps up.

Even across the WiFi the difference is impressive, 33Mbps down and 48Mbps up.

Who's your provider?

I have FIOS and I absolutely love it.

How is your Up speed faster than your Down? That's backwards from what it usually is.

I see that occasionally during speed tests, too. It happens.

Lots of devices sucking up bandwidth on the download allocation, no so many on the upload side. If it's a single-value up/down package then faster upload speeds aren't uncommon versus something like a 100 down / 50 up package.

Now that really IS a funny coincidence . . . after  many years of having AT&T DSL service (1.5 Mbps) I decided it was time for a change - largely because for about the last 1.5 to 2 months the service has been getting crappier and crappier, slowing down and sometimes cutting out altogether. And a visit by an AT&T tech didn't solve the problems.

AT&T stopped their higher speed services ONE street short of mine - and can't tell me when or even if they'll even be extending it.

So this very afternoon I shifted to 100 Mbps service from Spectrum Cable. Yeah, yeah, I know, cable companies aren't high on my list of favorite businesses either, but in this case, my 100 Mbps service came in on the Ookla speedtest at 117 Mbps. (I was lucky if AT&T's 1.5 Mbps service clocked in at an actual 1.3.)

And the cost is lower - at least for now.

I was able to download the 32+ GB of a fresh installation of Armored Warfare in about 45 minutes instead of the more than 2 days that DSL would have taken me - if it didn't hang or slow down.

So right now, I'm a happy camper like RKL.    =D

Next step, soon to follow: replacing my 18 or 19 year old 36" CRT TV in the living room with a new flat panel, probably a 4K Sony 65" 900E series.

It's been good so far. Haven't had an opportunity to stress it but two PCs and a phone running Pandora and Netflix on the Roku didn't show any lag. That's pretty well the most we would do anyway. The big trial will be if the wife is happy with file transfers when she has another Graphics design job to send.

Not knowledgeable about the network infrastructure Bolt uses, but it is a single fiber from the box on the side of the house to the modem. The Modem is an Alcatel-Lucent unit, I'll need to finish setting up my online account and get the docs for it and see just what I can do with it.

Don't take this personally, but ... I hate you! (0.65 MB download, 0.45 upload ... on a DSL line).

I hate anyone who gets double digits or more. I can't wait for this darn LEO broadband satellite array to get going.
