Title: Florida shooter withdraws plea
Post by: Hawkmoon on March 10, 2018, 11:50:16 AM
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/parkland/florida-school-shooting/fl-reg-florida-school-shooting-standing-mute-20180308-story.html

Nikolas Cruz has withdrawn his not guilty plea and intends to "stand mute" (not enter any plea) as a strategy to try to avoid the death penalty. I didn't know you could do that.

Nolo contendre,  IIRC.   It's not new.   I thought it had been arranged he WA going to plead guilty ,   thus avoiding the death penalty.  I guess I was wrong.

Nolo contendere is a well-known concept, and the media has always used it. Nolo contendere is a plea -- in this case, if I understand the article correctly and the author understands the defense attorney correctly, they don't intend to enter any plea at all. They intend to stand mute. Functionally, that may be equivalent to nolo contendere, but since they made a big deal about standing mute, I think there must be some difference.

It should be a formality at this point.  He's guilty as hell,  get a rope.
