Title: Josie the dog

Josie is a lab mix we adopted from a shelter, right after Thanksgiving. She was about 2 months old at the time.

She has gobs of energy, but after a few hours, she needs a  nap.

She's about 6 months old right now.

We didn't want to share any photos until she was old enough to get her rabies shot. You can never be too careful!

Congrats man. She's a good looking pup, and it looks like she's getting into that gangly phase where she'll be tripping over her own feet all the time.

There's something about a dog having those comically spindly legs that just cracks me right up. I kinda want a Doberman for that reason.

OK, you know what?

That I get.

I steadfastly refused to share Seren's name with anyone until A) she was born, and B) it was clear she had a really good chance of making it through the first couple of weeks.

That's actually not at all an uncommon... superstition... in the area of Pennsylvania where I grew up.

You don't share the baby's name with anyone lest the Devil be able to find her and take her. Once she's strong enough to fight the Devil off on her own, then you can share her name.

I know I had a couple of people who didn't get that very frustrated with me when I wouldn't share Seren's name with them.

I doubt he could give his dog rabies just through petting.

Good job taking pix (it's hard to photograph a black animal) I gave up trying to get any of Shadow.  I should try it again with the good camera...

Getting any kind of pic of a black dog is a challenge. Labs are great dogs, smart, affectionate, even protective of family at times. But they stay puppies for like 9 years.

Photographing Leonbergers is a REAL challenge because they tend to have very dark masks.

The best way to do it I've found is to get them outside, like on the north side of a house where there's no direct sunlight to interfere with the exposure and take a LOT of different shots at different exposures.

We had a beautiful female black lab. Every pic of her just looked like a dog-shaped hole in the background.

So, yeah, she's cute. But how do we get her to stop chewing everything, especially our hands? And my wife's hair? The silly thing even nibbles on my ear lobes.

6 month old lab (mix).  Give her lots to chew on, redirect the chewing to appropriate chew toys followed by lots of praise, and you have to wear her out with regular exercise.
Now shut up and post more puppy pics.

They have stuff you can paint on things to make them less appetizing for pups to teethe on, but I doubt your wife will want to wash her hair with it. Chewing is normal puppy activity. When I was in the 6th grade, I had to buy the school a new math book because our new German Shepherd pup chewed the corner off mine -- which was new that year.

You just have to wait it out. Buy her some rawhide chewie toys and train her to gnaw on those.

We got something like that, that I think was supposed to taste like rotten apples. Well, she seems to like rotten apples. My wife found something else, that's meant to keep humans from chewing their fingernails. That seemed to work better.

Oh, we've bought her all kinds of things to chew on. We've been freezing celery and carrots and sweet potatoes, which she loves. Thankfully, she has almost all her adult teeth now. We're hoping the chewing phase will settle down a bit soon. Someone at the pet store gave us a long list of things we shouldn't let our dog eat. The dog ate the list right away.

I've had a couple of dogs before, but never one this young. Thankfully, she learned to use the doggy door right away, and after a few weeks, she was even going outside for her doggy business.

My dog loved, Loved, LOVED the caps from water bottles.  Thrw him one in the dining room (with the hardwood floor) and he could entertain himself for hours flipping, chewing, and chasing it all over.

She's going to chew. It helps with teething in puppies, it's one of the primary ways in which she explores her world, and it's soothing/comforting to her.

As Jamis said, redirect her. Give her LOTS of toys to chew on, and many textures -- soft, rubbery, solid, etc.

Be careful about giving her bones like the ones she's chewing on in the one picture -- they can be very hard on teeth.

Nylabone and Kong should be your primary go tos.

About the only anti-chew material I've found that works for my dogs is Grannik's Bitter Apple.

But, some dogs are not put off by it, they actually like the taste.

Amelia's cat's favorite toys: water bottle caps and nerf bullets.

Seren loved the bottles themselves. I figured it was the crackling and squeaking noises that they made when he chewed on them.

Just make sure that whatever you give her that she doesn't chew it to the point where it could become dangerous to her.

Pearl just liked to make noise. She'd grab empty water bottles and crunch them in her mouth.

She also liked squeaky toys and dry spaghetti for the same reason.

Labs are mouthy, esp lab puppies. They chew.
Our male destroyed a Kong ball in 1 hour, reduced it to pieces no bigger than the end of my thumb. He also destroyed 2 aluminum frame pet doors- something I would not have thought possible.
If he focused on something he would destroy it like an industrial shredder and then look at you with a big happy face like "that was fun! Now what's  next?". It was hard to even get mad at him because he was just so darn happy about it.

When we met her, she climbed right into our laps, and curled up. But she also wanted to play. And then, she's just so cotton-pickin' cute.

OK, she just stopped being cute. Her April Fools' prank was to eat the hat band off of my fedora.

She yet lives. For now.

"To those who have cherished an affection for a faithful and sagacious dog, I need hardly be at the trouble of explaining the nature or the intensity of the gratification thus derivable. There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere Man."
