Granted, it's "only" ball ammo, but still impressive that the bullet did not defeat the armor. On the other hand, I would imagine there would still be significant internal injuries to the wearer.
Also: if it can stop .50BMG, why is it officially rated III+ and not IV? (I assume because it did not pass Level IV testing). Would be interesting to try a .30-06 AP round or similar on it.

So you'd still be dead only you would not have become as big of a mess?

That would absolutely wreck yer sternum I'd bet!

STERNUM!! Damned near KILLED 'em!
O wait, wrong joke.

Notice that the mannequin didn't move very much - which says something about "knockdown power" and the Hollywood movies where a guy hit with even lesser cartridges is picked up and goes flying through the air.
-
A trauma pad would be a good accessory. =D

Yeah, my first thought was OK, it stops a .50, but by that time both the armor and the bullet are on the other side of the body.

I almost posted the exact same thing :D

Yeah, stopping the .50BMG is cool and all that, but you're missing the big picture. That "plate" weighs only 4 pounds! That is nothing! I really hope that company can produce that armor at a decent price.

Yeah, if I'm going to line my whole wheelbarrow them they'd better be cheap!

MSRP on that armor is $409. That is pretty cheap.

Jokes aside, this looks like it could be a game changer for the troops we send down range. Plate carriers are heavy. Google tells me that a current plate (size large) weighs 13 pounds. So a full carrier starts at 26 pounds before you add mag pouches and other gear. Cut that plate carrier to 1/3 of the starting weight, and you reduce fatigue and increase mobility. Do that without sacrificing protection, and that's even better.

^^^
Not only personnel protection but it could be handy in vehicle protection also. Anything to get the weight down is a good thing.

I didn't consider vehicle protection. I wonder how that weight compares to what aircraft such as helicopters use now.
I have heard of newer polymer armor being pretty good. I had not heard it was good enough to stop 50 BMG.

That moment that your sternum comes out of your rectum, but at least your armor plates held up.

So you've seen that episode of My Little Pony as well? Yeah, it was pretty gruesome but they all learned an important lesson about trust, friendship and the difference between concealment and cover.
