Title: The Crown
Post by: Scout26 on July 24, 2018, 01:43:57 AM
Went to my local Cigar Lounge last Thursday and there were 6-7 people staring in rapt attention at the biggest of the big screen TV's.  No, not a sporting event, nor a pron movie, nor anything that one would expect to see in a place where people (mostly men) gather to smoke cigars, shot the *expletive deleted*it, and occasionally watch sporting events on TV.

It was Episode 6 of Season 1 of the Netflix series The Crown.

I, of course made a comment to the effect of "Didn't we kick their asses out in 1776?"  and was promptly shushed by all assembled.  And just so everyone understands, the gentlemen and ladies that attend this lounge are not what one would consider as upperclass or aristocracy, but working middle class people. Salesmen, managers, minor government functionaries, accountants, small businessmen, and the like.  Americans.

All sitting in rapt attention watching a show about Queen Elizabeth II.

And after 20 minutes, I had joined them in being thoroughly absorbed and sucked in by the program.   So we have binged watched it at the cigar lounge.   Since I missed the first five episodes of Season I, they are being kind enough to restart it, and I watched episodes 1 and 2 today, and shall go watch episode 3 and 4 tomorrow, and episode 5 on Wednesday.

I will say that the acting is top-notch.  John Lithgow as Churchill is simply superb.   All the other actors as amazingly good.  The cinematography is excellent, it's historically accurate, as are the props.

Highly recommend.

My wife and I like it.  We are awaiting the next season, with all new actors playing older versions of the Queen, etc.

Good drama is good drama.  I think they're still playing Shakespeare here and there, despite the fact that spoilers have been around for centuries.

I'm sometimes disappointed in the Brits because they seem to have dissolved into a complete nanny state, but I blame that on centuries of war gradually taking the bravest and finest and gutsiest out of their gene pool.

It leaves mainly the vapid and unthinking to continue to breed.

Darwin will out.

I was one of the people waiting for the release on that one. It is really good.

You also might like Victoria. My only beef with that is that they romanticized her relationship with Melbourne.

Regardless of subject, a good historical drama is good stuff.

Hah!  What a geezer you are.  My grandmother use to say things like that...especially "The truth will out" when she was teaching me the futility of lying.

^ :raspberry:

I thought it was Shakespearian, so I checked it:

Quote
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub

Too much of a good thing

Truth will out

Under the greenwood tree

Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown

There's quite a list of his phrases we still use today in that link.
