Title: Warning: shooting yourself in the face can lead to ugliness

His post-op photo actually looks not bad.  Unfortunate that it sounds like the donor killed himself.  And the article does not mention what caliber for face.

Shot placement counts more than caliber.  Even for suicide.   =D

The guy in the article looks really good considering he blew off half of his face.

Kurt Cobain disagrees.

Yep, always aim back, not up.

You can live without a face, nose, sinuses etc. if you aim up too far into your palate. You still won't live without a brainstem or spine if you aim too far back.

I think the reason so many people make this mistake is twofold. One, despite the fact that they're going to be dead shortly there's still an instinctive response to choking or ingesting a foreign object.  It feels like the bullet or shot is going to go down your throat of you don't aim upward enough.

Secondly,  most people feel as if their thoughts or mind is in a space located behind the eyes and just slightly above them.  It's mainly an illusion based on our senses, and the concious brain functions being biased towards the top and front of the brain. So the desire to destroy oneself makes it an instinctive aiming point, but not one that's universally fatal.

A moot point, I'd never leave a mess like that for my family or first responders. And I don't want to become an anti-RKBA statistic.

^^^^^

This is perhaps the most simultaneously helpful and disturbing post I've ever read . . . .

It is more just an observation that people who go for suicide (especially those who fail in the attempt) usually are not thinking logically about the task.

Failure to plan is planning to fail.

I'm 50/50 on Cobain. Either he listened to his own music or he woke up one day and realized he was married to Courtney Love. Either could be fatal.

I know of a local yute who was/is not worth much took himself to the self lobotomy clinic. Decided the answer to life was a Glock fotay to the head. In the temple, out the forehead, jumped up screaming momma it hurts. Yep, splattered his unused grey matter in front of his mom and 13 year old sister. Good job idiot.

I will never understand why people go the gun route. Too much goes wrong.

Plus, in this day in age, it's not exactly difficult to get a hold of drugs that take care of the problem without a huge mess.

Of course, no one ever messed up with drugs,  wound up getting their stomach pumped and a stay in the psychiatric ward.

Better than winding up with a face that looks like silly putty, but ....

Exactly my point.

Exactly my point.

If you're dead, why does it matter?

Suicide statistics seem to indicate when women commit suicide they tend to use methods that do not leave bits of them splattered across where ever they do it, ie., with poisons.
Men, otoh,  just splatter whatever, where ever.  I mean, us guys are the half of humanity that leaves the toilet seats up, whadya expect?
Usually a bullet to the head works pretty well.
Except .... when they miss.... [tinfoil]

My point was that with the drugs, if you screw up or get caught you don't end up looking like the dude in the story.  ;/ Wasn't that obvious?

Yep, you end up looking like a normal vegetable.

That reconstructive surgery cost about $1.5 million.
