A Vermont man locked in a bitter dispute with the town of Westford decided to take matters into his own “hand” in December — by erecting a giant statue of a middle finger for all to see, NBC 5 reported.

“I’m fed up and it was time to do something,” Ted Pelkey said, according to the station.

The statue is a large hunk of carved wood that looks like a hand flipping the bird. Pelkey placed it on a high pedestal so it could be seen from the road, and surrounded it with floodlights to keep it illuminated at night.

“We’ve been trying to put a business there for the past 10 years,” Pelkey said, according to the Free Press. “It’s just never-ending. They’re railroading us really good.”

That is one way to go.  Do you think they will approve his building permit now?

A government making a permit conditional upon restricting one's First Amendment rights?  That would be an interesting lawsuit to watch.

Is there anyone left who wasn't born in during the Roosevelt administration who would be offended by this image?

Is offending octogenarians more acceptable than offending millennials or 50 year-olds?

If it only offends the very old, what would be the point of it?

I mean in the era of 2018, a carved statue of a hand with the middle finger extended shouldn't be deemed so offensive to anyone as to warrant censorship by the mainstream press.

I know trashy people think it's cute when their kids ape the vulgar behaviors they see around them, but there may be parents that don't want their kids to see things like that when they (the parents, I mean) are just watching or reading the news.

I can agree with you with television.

It looked to me like an image still from a video, but I'm not sure why you'd make a distinction between TV and other media.

And the kid thing is only one consideration. Just in general, an unedited photo would be more appropriate in some tabloid. I think the broadcaster/web publisher is just trying to be professional.
