I would love to see a demonstration of this thing firing

Still "scans" the same, kerplunk onto the floor, but she recovered.  How about "would faint if" or something like that?

I'm recalling the "zip guns" of my Brooklyn High School days when they used a spring clothes pin and an automobile antenna.  (Don't ask me for details.)

Nowadays I guess the technology of zip guns has advanced to the use of a staple gun.
