Title: Mayor Bloomberg officially announces candidacy for the Presidency

It will be interesting to see where he ends up amongst the Democratic candidates.  Based on his legislation that he bought in Washington state, he will be no friend to gun owners.

I just saw that Chris talked about the Bloomberg candidacy in the 'gun control push' post, so this should be closed.

Why do we need either of these threads for another billionaire, dark horse candidate? This guy seems like another Hillary, but w/o the name recognition, or the network of Democratic loyalists.

That all depends on how much his various gun control groups help him out.  If they do, he has people in all 50 states.

Maybe those people will work for his campaign and stop trying to push gun control for a little while.

I for one am quite concerned about this. There  are plenty of moderate Democrats out there that would love to have "any functioning adult" to vote for. On the surface Bloomberg is highly qualified.

In case you are not reading the Sig P320 thread, read my post there about what Mayor Bloomberg has in stock for gun owners:

Apparently he's too white and, gasp, male. But that doesn't stop them from cashing his checks

“I’m not super psyched about it but I respect him enormously,” said Jessica Craven, 51, the legislative lead for her Moms Demand Action group in Northeast Los Angeles. “I don’t think we need more candidates — more white male candidates.”

Bloomberg doesn't stand a chance.  He has multiple, public rants and tweets that are racist by normal standards and that are genocidal-racist by today's SJW standards.

^ Don't give me false hopes with that Twitchy sequence.  That guy is a powerhouse.

Money, major informational outlet, broad contacts across the continent, extensive experience in governmental management, ambition... even at his age....

I'm told that his influence has rammed through major gun control laws in individual States, and he's from an area (New York City) which has had major strict gun control laws since the 1920s.  Hence, gun control is "normal," despite what the Constitution says, hint-hint.

And as the only Democratic candidate with half a brain, he would have a lot of appeal for the <ahem, koff-koff> "middle of the road" Democrats, if there are any remaining.

Don't dismiss him as a strong contender for both the nomination and the election.

Oh, and did I mention the money?

1.  He's got billions.. actually billions...in his bet worth.  He can afford to outspend all of the Dem candidates and have money left over for the general election.
2.  He plays as a moderate on most issues.  Against the wealth tax, the Medicaid for All, and a lot of the 'free for all' stuff, which will sell well to the middle.
3.  He has a network in place and a lot of supporters who will swear loyalty to Lord Bloomberg.
4.  He's slicker than Biden, straighter than Mayor Pete, and presents less crazy than a lot of the other.

My fear is that he is electable.  He gets any success by playing the center,  and he'll generate momentum over the socialists.  Against Trump...who knows?  He wins, and given his history of banning large soft drinks, he'll enact gun control by executive orders.

Ditto.

He's also <ahem> flexible.

A lifelong Democrat before seeking elective office, Bloomberg switched his party registration in 2001 to run for mayor as a Republican. He defeated opponent Mark J. Green in a close election held just weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks. He won a second term in 2005, and left the Republican Party two years later. Bloomberg campaigned to change the city's term limits law, and was elected to his third term in 2009 as an independent on the Republican ballot line.

The end justifies the means.

And, pun intended, he's got the means.  Fifty-eight billion of them.

He doesn't even need a party.

I still don't think he will resonate with most dems and independents.

My only fear would be two-fold:

1) Like what I did with Trump but in reverse, people on the left might vote for him as an FU.

2) There is actually a whole sub-species of republicans/conservatives that think he is okay. I see them all the time on the teevee business programs. Big city and wealthy Rs that only care about business and wealth, and could care less about soda banning nanny state stuff or gun control or personal freedom.

Hope he gets traction. He wins and the country will hopefully forever banish electing rich New Yorkers. He gets primary traction and the dem party may well eat its remaining self in prime time, No way the radical wing goes for a rich old white man not named Bernie. Third party fracture happens?

He's got the dough.

I heard an interesting assessment on the news this morning: He has spent something like $150 million to prop up and get dems elected and/or appointed to various positions in many states, and the talk was that it's now time for all those people to pay the godfather and use their positions to push his candidacy. Or else.

"One day... and that day may never come... I may ask a favor of you.  Until that day, this is a gift."

Saw one of his over-the-air, Denver, commercials a few minutes ago.

Man, he hit every political buzzpoint there ever was in only 30 seconds.

Very effective.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that jokes about him (such as that silly Twitchy thing about decaf coffee) will have any effect, so don't waste your energy that way.

As I said, this guy's a powerhouse.

I heard some analysis that the reason Joe Biden is still in the lead (despite being senile) is that he is seen as more moderate than the others.  Bloomberg might actually do pretty good if he avoids being painted as just another radical leftist.

oth Emerson and Rasmussen are reporting Black American support for President Trump is at 34%
I saw this reported on Twitter a couple days ago.  I am not sure where to find a link.

If Trump is gaining support from black voters, that would be a HUGE problem for Democrats.  I am not sure if Bloomberg would be able to stop that since he has his own history.

a lot of my drunk ny friends who think they are conservative because they recognize how
dumb AOC is, actually like bloomberg - support his stop and frisk laws.

but outside of friends/family of NY L.E/ F.D, i doubt he will get much traction.

I'm glad he is way more arrogant than Trump, Trump has a great sense of humor
and knew that he needed a TV show to learn how to communicate to a national sized audience.
Bloomberg knows that people are stupid at the national level but doesn't know he can't telegraph that and win an election.

it will be like the bush/gore debate ... Gore, nominally smarter than Bush, came off as Gore, rude , condescending , arrogant and bloomberg will do the same

Tax the poor and they'll live longer

Quote
Billionaire Michael Bloomberg, however, took a very different approach to the subject. During the International Monetary Fund's 2018 Spring Meeting he actually argued that taxing the poor is a good thing.

"[Some] say, well, 'taxes are regressive.' But in this case, yes they are, that's the good thing about them because the problem is in people that don't have a lot of money," Bloomberg said. "And so higher taxes should have a bigger impact on their behavior and how they deal with themselves."

"So I listen to people saying, 'Oh, we don't want to tax the poor.' Well, we want the poor to live longer so that they can get an education and enjoy life and that's why you do want to do exactly what a lot of people say you don't want to do," he explained. "The question is: do you want to pander to those people or do you want to get them to live longer?"

I suppose there is a somewhat weird intersection of his venn diagram and mine. I want to tax the poor so they have some skin in the game. When you get to slide on taxes plus get free stuff, it only makes you want more free stuff because you have no responsibilities nor any negative consequences. If you have to write a check to the gov, you begin to understand that free stuff isn't free.
