Do we need more proof? Probably not but, if so, here's another example:

Real ID. Apparently a lot of people who fly have not upgraded their drivers licenses to Real ID, which means that as of October 1 they won't be able to get through security checkpoints in the U.S. to board commercial aircraft. So the honcho of the Airports Council International-North America (never heard of them) is declaring a crisis. His solution? Postpone the deadline.
Seriously?
The Real ID Act was passed in 2005. Implementation has been deferred multiple times since then, most recently in 2013. That's when the October 1, 2020, deadline was established. So we have had seven YEARS of advance notice that this is coming. The solution (IMHO) is not to defer the implementation yet again. If this program is important enough to have become federal law FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, it's important enough that we either piss or get off the pot. Leave the deadline in place, and get the word out to people that the deadline is approaching.
In my case, I knew about it the last time I renewed my drivers license. What I didn't know was what kinds of documentation they require for a Real ID-compliant license, so I had to renew with a non-compliant version. Knowing the deadline is coming, I recently scrounged up the required documentation and had my drivers license converted. The new one arrived in the mail yesterday.
In reality, I don't need a Real ID license. I have a passport, and a passport card. Either will also work to board aircraft, but with the Real ID license it's one less thing to carry with me.
If Real ID is so unimportant that it can be deferred yet again ... IMHO we should just repeal the law and call it a day.

When my wife went in March last year to get her DL the state was not set up yet. I had to ge mine in June and have the real ID. MO has been one of the slow ones but I'm sure it here are a bunch more states like it.
-
It's funny. I went almost 20 years without flying. Then, just a few months ago, I had to renew my driver's license, and didn't bother with going to Real ID. Suddenly, the boss asks me to get on a plane for New Orleans. In April, they're sending me to Phoenix, but I'm apparently not going to NO next December (after Real ID kicks in).
-
My DL expires this summer. I was told that I may need to take a birth certificate with me. They took electronic fingerprints last time.

I had to take:
- Birth certificate (or passport)
- Driver's license
- Social security card (or 1099 showing FULL SSAN)
- Bank statement no older than 90 days
- Utility bill not older than 90 days
-
TX is already compliant. When I changed my address in November my replacement license came with the gold star.

All I needed for mine both in CA and ID was passport, old DL, SSN card, and a utility bill. I think it can vary by state so you should check with your DMV's website.

MN is slightly more strict than the federal requirements. It's causing problems now because they (the state) waited so long, and most people here have non-RealID licenses and need to upgrade them.
I got one last year; there were only 6 license centers in the whole state that could issue them. (I assume they all can now) Fortunately, one of those 6 was closeby. I brought a certified birth certificate, original SSN card, propery tax bill, non-expired old DL, and I think a utility bill. I also had a W-2 form with me, but something else covered that requirement; probably the SSN card.
-
Given for whom I work, I really need to upgrade to the Real ID. I don't fly, but I do have to access government facilities on a pretty regular basis. My badge doesn't expire for another couple of years, but I know that the next time I have to upgrade it I'll need the RID. And, occasionally, I go to a federal facility that requires not only my badge but also my driver's license to get in.
-
We can't even consistently require an actual ID to vote, how do you think people are going to be smart enough to get a Real ID for travel?
I just checked, my license isn't realid compliant, but it expires around the time my passport expires anyway.

What will happen to a person who does not want or get a Real ID and is then summoned for jury duty in federal court?
Then, on the firearms side of things, how long before a person is required to have a Real ID in order to fill out a 4473?

You show up for duty, and if they won't let you in the building that's their problem not yours. (I don't think you need a Real ID to goto the courthouse)

Colorado:
I have a black star in the upper right of my DL. I thought that was a RealID emblem, but now I'm reading about gold stars.
I don't remember doing or bringing anything special to any of my DL renewals. So what's the black star for?

That's to identify the first in line for the concentration/reeducation/extermination camps the democrats will set up to take care of you evil right wingers as soon as Trump is gone.

My MNDL has a US flag emblem on the front right side, just below the centerline. I thought that was the Real ID symbol. And there are also licenses with a star instead of a flag that are not RealID but are some kind of "enhanced" ID, but that might be a MN thing... Wait, I got that backwards, the enhanced ID is more than Real ID, and is good at border crossings. The enhanced ID must be the one with the flag. Now I've confused myself. ;/

I'm sure that happened years ago. Check your Googles.

I just thought I could get a quick answer.
-
I would expect the black star is an easy way to identify non- real IDs. Black star for regular license, gold star for real ID. I think "Gold star" is a Real ID standard - both my CA and ID Real IDs had/have the gold star.
-
I guess I'll call the DMV and wade through their excruciating number menu... which rarely has a selection relevant to "your" particular question.
"To find out which faucets have hot water and which ones cold water, press 975."
Like "google," you practically have to know the answer in the first place in order to get an answer without wading through 26 pages of ads which just fan out to other ads and other unrelated stuff.
I just figured somebody here would have a quick valid answer.

This does not seem accurate.
Wisconsin offers both REAL ID-compliant and non-compliant driver licenses and ID cards. The cards look similar; REAL ID-compliant are marked with a black star, while non-compliant cards are marked “NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES.”
The gold star must only be for good behavior.
I just figured somebody here would have a quick valid answer.
Black OR gold star is good

The gold star is the Real ID compliance indicator. The American flag means you are a U.S. citizen.
Dunno what a black star means.
-
Black star means this person is a pita and should be told they have the wrong paperwork every time they come into the DMV

Thank you, DIttoHead and Hawkmoon (#13).
Jim147, they don't need a black star to know I'm a pita.

Wonder how I will get mine?
No utility bills (Apartment complex handles all that), never needed a passport.
Birth Cert, SSN card, Bank Statements, Driver's License, DD214, are all on hand though.

Those should do it. I used my VA health system ID card instead of a DD-214. Don't know if those are interchangeable in all states.
-
I keep both on me so I should be good. Thanks!
I need to get a new card, mine is 10+ years old.

They count as utility bills here to. Each person's DMV or state DOT site should have a list of acceptable residency documentation. Here's the example from Idaho DOT:
Applicant must provide two documents. Documents must display the applicant’s name and principal Idaho residence address. Acceptable documents (must not be laminated) include:
Lease/rental agreement, mortgage or deed
Account statement from one or two different public utilities. Must show service address of residency and customer's name; 3⁄4 statement page accepted. Cell phone bills are not accepted.
Account statement from bank or financial institution
Tax document Form W-2 or Form-1099 (may be the same document used in Step 3 above if dated within current year)
Medical or insurance provider statement, invoice, or explanation of benefits
Pay stub or employment verification (must list the customer's legal name)
Idaho school enrollment records with current address or VOC for current school year and current address (college ID not accepted)
Motel, hotel, campground or RV park receipt on letterhead that indicates 30 days or more of residency
Military Leave and Earning Statement (LES) to evidence Idaho residency of applicant deployed outside of Idaho while on active duty
Relief agency or shelter certification
Residency affidavit (must be signed by adult over 18)
Court documents (original or non-altered, and must have current address on the document for proof of Idaho residency)
Record of property taxes assessed or paid (receipt date within one year)
A vehicle, homeowner’s, or renter’s liability card, binder, or bill issued by an Idaho-based carrier (must be valid and unexpired, must have current residential address, and can be original paper, print, or photocopy of e-document)

Louisiana, right?

Looks like Louisiana does accept cell phone bills. They also accept W-2s and 1099s with a partial SSAN. My state doesn't -- my first attempt was a bust because I brought a 1099 with only the last 4 digits, and they rejected that.
-
Well that's a bummer.
I'll be damned. Apparently cell phone bills aren't acceptable in Virginia, either.
I'm reading through Virginia's requirements, and I have consternation about something...
The way it reads it seems that, even though I'm a US citizen since birth, I'll have to provide 1 document proving Proof of Identity and a separate document for Proof of Legal Presence???
Is that correct?
How the hell is that required when my proof of identity (birth certificate) is defacto proof that I'm a US citizen entitled to be here?
I hope I'm reading that wrong.
-
OK, just went through the Virginia online document selector... I don't need to provide separate identity and legal presence documents.
-
Black star would be a good way to identify a convicted felon, person adjudicated mentally defective, drug addict, or someone other wise prohibited from purchasing a firearm. Presto! Universal background check! >:D

An expired passport is still a valid photo ID, ain't it? For something like 10 years? Just not good for travel? Or is it only useful when getting a new passport?
Wife needs to upgrade her DL and just found her birth certificate and passport this morning (been tearing the house up looking for 'em) The passport expired 8 years ago.
-
"An expired passport is still a valid photo ID, ain't it?"
Not 100% sure, but I don't think so. Maybe for some private transactions, but I suspect nothing that would be a local, state, or Fed gov. transaction.
Well, it looks like in some cases yes, it is...
https://getawaytips.azcentral.com/can-use-expired-passport-travel-nationally-usa-5475.html
The only problem for me in that scenario is that I got my passport when I was 15, so it was only good for 5 years, which means that it expired in.... 1985.
I really should get a new passport.
-
OK, doesn't seem as if it will be that big a hassle to get a new passport. $110. Don't see myself needing one any time soon, but still not a bad thing to have.
-

Most all of those paperless vendors will let you download a PDF of your bill if you have a printer.

For a few more bucks, have them issue a passport card while you're at it. Not valid for travel to Yurp, but valid for crossing into and back from Mexico and Canader.

Oregon still hasn't implemented Real ID. The state has put it off for as long as possible, and now Real IDs won't be available until July 6th at the earliest. Provided they don't *expletive deleted*ck it up like they do everything else.
And of course, my license expired February 2nd, which means I'm going to have to go to the DMV to renew my license twice in the same year.
-
The chances of me ever crossing the border into Mexico are somewhere between "are you out of your *expletive deleted*ing mind" to "No goddamned way, Jose!"

The chances of me ever crossing the border into Mexico are somewhere between "are you out of your *expletive deleted*ing mind" to "No goddamned way, Jose!"
I agree completely. My late wife's cousin is a professor at a university in Mexico City. When he visited us several years ago, he said, "Sergia can visit me in Mexico because she's a Latina. You -- don't go to Mexico." A friend in Brazil told me the same thing.
Nonetheless, the last time I got a new passport I opted for the passport card, too. I just thought it was a good thing to have -- and I don't think I knew about Real ID at the time. My driver's license is now Real ID compliant but, if I hadn't been able to scrounge up all the required documentation, I could have just carried the passport card and not worried about my non-Real ID driver's license.
An advantage to using the passport card is that it doesn't have your address on it, so it's a way to let fewer people know where there's an empty house to burgle.
-
Wife is gathering doc to upgrade her DL; I think I mentioned that earlier. She also needs a copy of our marriage license because her name no longer matchs her birth certificate. (something else for the ladies to deal with that we might not think about) I have to go dig thru the safe deposit box again this afternoon for it.
-
From what I've seen, necessary document requirements are neither egregious nor extensive. Pretty simple, actually. It's just a matter of finding the time and having the docs on hand.
Brad

Virginia doesn't specifically state that they're acceptable, but I'm going to try to use my CCW as one of my proofs of address.

I guess we're lucky. From what I understand, Texas DL/ID documentation requirements met Real ID standards before Real ID was an itch in some senator's pants. For us, having the Little Gold Star is just a matter of getting a replacement DL/ID card. I did an address change back in November and my new card had the star.

Black star would be a good way to identify a convicted felon, person adjudicated mentally defective, drug addict, or someone other wise prohibited from purchasing a firearm. Presto! Universal background check! >:D
Jeeze, I hope you're kidding, because I don't remember doing anything to satisfy Black Star Real ID requirements except having the same address on my DL for almost 25 years and my third CCW renewal went right through slickely and smoothely.. Maybe that's how they picked up "the proof."
That could be it, because, as I've said before, the CCW is way more bulletproof an ID procedure than the driver's license.
On the other hand, being 81 yo, I don't remember much of anything except my two weddings.
And even the weddings are a little fuzzy.
Terry
-
I dug the marriage license out of the safe deposit box. Wife was looking at it, and it says we were married on April 16, 1986. I'd never really looked at it before. We were actually married on April 19 (and I just looked at a 1986 calendar to make sure the 19th was on a Saturday.)
I assume at this point it doesn't really matter, and getting the county/state record corrected would be more hassle than it's worth? The preacher who performed the ceremony is a not-too-distant cousin of mine and he's still alive. He'll probably think this is funny...

You'll want to maintain a current passport.
I guess having visited Mexico and Canada with nothing but a DL makes me an old fogey.

One of the articles I read about Real ID suggested that people whose driver's license is not Real ID-compliant might still be allowed to fly if they go through a lengthy interrogation and satisfy the TSA drones that they are who they say they are.
Personally, I couldn't count on it.
But ... "nowadays" you don't need Real ID. That becomes mandatory in October.
-

Pretty much. Assuming they don't push the implementation back again, after Oct, you will need a READ ID compliant card to board an airplane. If your State has dropped the ball there are some other ID's you can get that count (Passport is the easiest), but yeah, no flights for you without ID.
-
From what I can tell, getting a passport is easier than getting a Real ID. While you still need to show up at a Post Office or wherever in person if you've never had one before, you only need a birth certificate or equivalent and a photo ID.
The last time I renewed mine, I did everything from home, including using the State Dept smart phone passport photo app (Protip: also an excellent app for doing CCW and other "gun permission" photos that require passport photos).
