With special attention to the Virus threads:
Where is "around here?" And which is "my State?"
A lot of times this can be known by personal familiarity with the poster and sometimes from the person's profile, but please don't assume your readers world-wide are mind readers, too. Save us the research, please.
Same thing with the gas prices thread.
We don't need to see a birth certificate or verify your driver's license, or capture your social security number, but an included up-front general location would sometimes be helpful.

Some of us (at least one of us, anyway) write "my state" specifically so as NOT to divulge a specific location.
The location is blank in my profile for the same reason. Yours, on the other hand, lists a place that I can't find on any may ("COMMIERADO"), so that's not functionally any different from leaving it blank.

Like your residence in a perpetual state of excess is a surprise to anyone... ;/

If everybody did as you ask you wouldn't be able to gripe about it . . .

State of Confusion (which also describes my "around here.")

A perpetual state of chaos is probably closer to the truth. I'm too poor to indulge in much excess of any kind.
-
"Some of us (at least one of us, anyway) write "my state" specifically so as NOT to divulge a specific location."
Oh, as if eliminating 49 states is really going to allow "them" to track you down or stalk your ass.
Get real.
If you're going to post "information," the "information" may be useless without some geographical tag, so don't bother posting useless "information." As I say, we don't need your SSN and street address to nail down "There were 147 cases in my State."
[tinfoil]
Jeeze.
"Yours, on the other hand, lists a place that I can't find on any may ("COMMIERADO"), so that's not functionally any different from leaving it blank."
=D And of course you couldn't find COMMIERADO on any may [sic: "map"] since it's "COmmierado," not COMMIERADO.

It’s right there in my profile info.
If I think it’s relevant to be more specific I state my state in the post.
One of these days I am going to flee Illinois and live like a gypsy in a conversion van for a couple years.
-
Gas prices around here are still $2.60. I wish they'd drop down to what they are the next state over.

That's how I feel, that state to the east of us always has lower gas/diesel prices but unless I am there for something else it is too far to drive just for fuel.

When I mention Texas, people complain about that half the time so I don't see that it matters.

I need to edit my location to in Terry's head.

I’m in Tejas. Does that help?

Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.

"It’s right there in my profile info."
Yeahbut. A stream of posts declaring their situation without their up front location is kind of minimally informative if you have to look everyone up. That was my main point.
Hawkmoon, I thought I changed that a while ago, so I tried again today, still didn't work. Turns out you have to click the change button to effect a change. That button is actually off my screen since I'm using a high magnification on IE for readability, so I didn't see it. :old:
So you're right, but I don't think "COMMIERADO" is so hard to interpret. Besides, my point is that in threads like the virus and the gas ones, people trying to track where the changes are ought to be able to do it from right there in the individual post, so don't change the subject. COMMIERADO is more like someone saying they're from Tejas... which I see someond did. Now was that so hard?
I made my point, take it or leave it, that communication should be made easy for the communicatee, but it was fun seeing the responses.
Oh, thanks, fistful.

S.E. Minnesota; I think I live about 100 miles north of Charby. But right now I'm at the northern edge of Houston, Texas. Was going to start driving home tomorrow but Wife says I should stay put for a while. If so I will cut my vacation (it's been a sucky vacation) short a couple of days and catch up on my work.

NWIL.
Kingcreek is south of me a bit. Scout/Amy was east a bit. Dual's up a bit from that. Charby's the other direction, "somewhere".

South and west of you, probably less than 60 miles as the crow flies, a little over an hour drive.

OK. I make it as far west as Dubuque on occasion for work.

Is the “Quarry” restaurant still there in the old district?
Found that place by accident once while traveling through and had the best duck I ever ate.

Yes, but just doing takeout right now. =D

Louisville, Ky
Northerners think we're southern. Southerners think we're northern. Easterners think we're western. Westerners think we're eastern.
And yes we wear shoes. Some people, seem to be mostly Californians, actually act surprised that we do. I have tell them we're not WV.

I take my shoes off at the state line whenever I drive thru Kentucky :D (usually on I-24) It just seems fitting

That's as good as you're going to get from me...
Actually, that would do just fine, information-wise.
Summarizing:
The issue for the non-disclosure camp:
Some of us (at least one of us, anyway) write "my state" specifically so as NOT to divulge a specific location.
The issue for the poor non-telepathic reader (e.g., me):
If you're not going to give any clue as to your location (even a general one), then your "information" is non-information and therefore basically useless, so why post anything at all?
Indeed: WHY?
Terry

I'd tell you where I am, but my wife says I don't know half the time. That might make anything I tell you inaccurate.
-

In your case a hemisphere will do. But please specify East or West or North or South in order to maximize your information transmission.
If you specify North versus South as well as East versus West, I reckon that would then be a "quadrisphere," thereby increasing the danger of exposing your true identity by two times.
Can't have that, now, can we?
Terry

Out of curiosity, why is the information useless if you don't know the state?

You kidding me? ("State" is just an example; don't take that literally.)
"It's snowing like mad here and gas is down to $1.39.9."
What good does that do you? The "information" is useless.
"It's snowing like mad here in Colorado and gas is down to $1.39.9."
Slightlly more helpful without being personally revealing.
"It's snowing like mad here in Golden Colorado and gas is down to $1.39.9."
Much more useful (to truckers, e.g.), and still not personally revealing.
Even "It's snowing like mad here at Latitde 39.9°North, Longitude 105.1° West, Elevation 5551 ft and gas is down to $1.24.9" is still more helpful, but, realistically, doesn't ID you unless you're in the only ranch house on 2000 acres !
Get it now?

What good does that do you? The "information" is useless.
Using gasoline prices as an example, if people have been periodically posting the price of petrol in their particular (unidentified) corner of the universe, you can follow the trend without knowing where they are.
-
I do try to add location if it's contextually relevant to my post. For example, I mention Kansas City when speaking about local covid19 response stuff happening here.

Well, that's what I was getting at.

You kidding me? ("State" is just an example; don't take that literally.)
"It's snowing like mad here and gas is down to $1.39.9."
What good does that do you? The "information" is useless.
From a practical standpoint almost all the geographically specific information posted here is useless. Gas prices, for example, can vary greatly across a state, and certainly vary across time. In your example, the usefulness of any anecdotal snapshot gas pricing posted here is essentially strictly to satisfy curiosity and interest. If you're interested in useful gas price data you're going to need another source.
Maybe we should just replace the gas price thread with a link to GasBuddy.com, since that information is more useful?
-
"What good does that do you? The "information" is useless."
You're confused. It's not "information" of an actionable type that would be of any use to anyone not located near that poster.
What it is, however, is conversational interest.
