Just got my new one about a week ago.

Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo 2.33ghz (dual core), 17" screen, 23" cinema display, 3GB ram, ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics processor w/DVI-out and 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, 160gb internal drive and 2TB of FW-800 external (LaCie Big Disk). And Final Cut Pro 5.1, Photoshop CS2 soon to be CS3, etc.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I got a 24" widescreen monitor in January. The old computer didn't quite support the monitor's native resolution, so that was kind of odd. Now, though.... sweet.

I don't need video. They have that clamped down extra tight here where I work.

I just got a new machine too.  It's a Dell D620 with a 2ghz Centrino DualCore, 1gig ram, and a widescreen format screen.  I don't know what the other specs are other than it's smaller, lighter, and faster than my old machine.  I needed more ram to run a network management tool I'm getting ready to start using and they got me a new laptop instead. What did you get? A friend has been agonising about buying a 24" BenQ.

It's an Acer.

Not great, but it works well for what I'm doing.

It's also a 22", not a 24 as I first said.

On my desk at home I dropped a 22" Viewsonic back in October for a freelance project I'm working on.

I was seriously considering bumping up to a 30" but now the project is looking kind of shaky. If things settle down and the company gets its head out of its ass, I might just do it.

My main work machine is a Dell XPS M1710 laptop.  Core 2 Duo T7200 processor 2ghz proc, 256 mb GeForce 7950 GTX, DVD-RW, 2Gb 667mhz, wireless/bluetooth, 80 Gb SATA, 17" Wide-Aspect UltraSharp WUXGA at 1920x1200.  Oh yea, even has a subwoofer with bass reflex port built in.  Being a BOFH has its advantages.

It's not bad for a laptop.  Specs

I might be able to swing an XPS M2010 this June.  My boss is dubious to the 'need' for such a laptop. Thing weighs 18.3 pounds and can outperform most decent servers.  Costs about the same, so it bloody well should.

Cripes, with that kind of performance you can Ebay your stove and cook on the laptop...

Pfft.  It only has a 300w power brick.

Yea, but I had to give up extra HD space and a 512 meg graphics card to get the laptop within acceptable price.  I need to get the XPS M2010 down to $2.5k to get it approved...  AND I want a video card with at least half a gig of RAM.  Sigh, there's no point to having 8 speakers and a subwoofer without a decent video card.  The only plus is my Dell rep is a very nice lady who has bills that needs to get paid.  I'm sure we can come to an arrangement.

17" widescreen with 1920x1200? My aging Samsung 172w will manage 1280x768. 1920x1200 is what this BenQ can do.

This friend of mine wants the BenQ because it has a HDCP compliant HDMI input. Computer monitor, and future HD screen (from sources like satellite or blu-ray) in one box is the idea. I'm not really up on all that.

Unless they've changed significantly, BenQ used to be bottom of the list in quality ratings.

In my experience, most of the performance is tied to the size of RAM available, and to a significant but lesser extent, the quality and capacity of the video card. IBM machines are overhyped on processor cycles, but the hidden bottlenecks are usually elsewhere. Most recently, the biggest gripes I have are with outdated drivers, software instabilities, and poor manufacturer support.

For me, these days, the biggest bottleneck is disk I/O.  Mainly because I haven't updated my PC since before faster drives and connections became common (SATA was just coming out when I built the current PC).  Laptops aren't known for their disk I/O.  Otherwise, I have sufficient memory and a video card sufficient for my needs.

I preserve a good amount of resources by not letting the computer load stuff into memory that I don't use on a regular basis.

And here I thought your bottleneck was the chair to keyboard interface...

Good point on the memory, which Mtnbkr very graphically pointed out to me with my new machine last year.

I got a new Dell, and I forgot to upgrade the memory before I ordered it, so it came with the bare minimum -- 256K.

The simple act of turning it on buried the memory with all of the resident crap that Dell loads into their new machines.

He removed a lot of the Dell preload crap, and I upgraded to a Gig of memory.

Problem solved.

Dell is paid to install the crapware.  Doesn't matter to me, because I immediately format any machine.  New or used.  Security is one reason, the other is removing all the crap I don't need or want.  Theoretically, it'd be a good idea to wipe your computer clean and re-install from scratch every couple years.

That's the best solution, but these days I'm short on time and I'm fundamentally lazy.  It doesn't take much effort to clean the crap and turn off unwanted services.

Of course, I say that, but the only new machine I've purchased in a decade (that came with an OS preinstalled) was my wife's laptop.  It's used primarily as a web terminal and photo album, so it's performance isn't terribly critical.

It's about time I format and rebuild my laptop.  My Dell Inspiron 6000 did the little Dell pop-up stating that the warranty was about to expire.  Good.  Now I can get rid of all the crapware that litters the taskbar.   grin

Well, I finally managed to convince my boss to let me get an XPS M2010.  His provision was it had to be used for my stated purpose, namely being able to fully emulate one of our servers.  Dell had assured us it was fully not possible.

As one famous Browncoat said, We've done the impossible and that makes us mighty.

Is that a Windows Server 2003 boot screen?  Why I think it is!  Writing up a HOWTO for installing 2003 or XP, neither is supported by Dell on that model.  Finding the correct drivers was tricky.  The XPS design team claim only Vista can run on it, maybe XP.  Righto.

From the door inward, that's three PowerEdge 2950 servers with 3 Tb per, my fridge/water cooler, DVD NAS, the holy Mountain Dew, my new M2010, my old 1710, the server hutch (27 inch "server monitor", network monitoring station, switch, 12 Tb DAS, another 2950) and random PC's/tools under the desk.  My crackberry (8800) and some prototype smart phone running Windows Mobile 6 is in the mess somewhere.

Yea, well.  New company uh, thing.  6S, don't ask me what it stands for.  I have to clean up and organize everything.  The wall behind me is lined with boxes, and my safe.  Not going to be allowed to keep anything under my desk.  And they're trying to explain that I can't build servers at my desk.  Another policy says I can't build servers in the server room.  Sigh

The dreaded 6S is Japanese quality assurance, seirei and others I have it at work also, I wish they would just say neatness, organization, etc., instead I have to have a little cheat sheet to know what they want.  I wish that upper management would just use the old Dupont or Ford QA

Yea, we have a check list too.  Thing is, I get the need for organization and neatness.  Unless I worked 12-14 per day, every day, it isn't going to happen without pulling time away from other projects.  I have a complete DR center to build in my spare time as is.  I like the idea as I understand it, but I only wish I had the time to actually do it.

I admit to having zero clue what it actually is besides a quasi philosophy to increase production by order and neatness.  Which sounds fine in theory, but if you spend more time working on neatness than the 'savings' in productivity, it seems like a step backwards.  I guess I just need to read up on it more.
