My wife and I were discussing the LGBTQ thing and came to a stalemate. I think the "Q" in LGBTQ stands for queer.
She thinks it must stand for something else because the word queer is offensive to some and political correctness is trying to phase out the word.
So who's right here? Does the "Q" stand for queer?
Does anybody know?

Could be, I guess it depends on which queer you are talking to.

The Q is for queer.
Back when I was young, queer==homosexual. I've never dug into what they mean by the word now.

The Q can also stand for questioning: someone questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. I knew that HR training would come in handy some day.

I don't know what your HR department told you, but the 'Q' in LGBTQ stands for Queer.

Actually his HR (and DOD's for that matter) are up to date. There is still some pushback from within the LGBTQ community on the use of "Queer" and whether or not it's pejorative. There is a not insignificant group that uses that "Q" as "questioning".
Here is one group that lists both.https://gaycenter.org/about/lgbtq/ If you'd like to go down that search rabbit hole there are a ton of others that either use Questioning, or both.
Much like the actual gender in question, it may depend on who you are talking to what it actually means.

I thought it was a cheat code.
L, G, B, T, Q, M, N, O, P, *,*, left, right, left, right, up, down, up down.....
I can never remember the whole thing. I forget which game it works on.

LGBTQQIP2SAA (and a silent 9) stands for: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, pan-sexual, 2-spirited, asexual, and allies. This is the proper acronym for the queer community.
In his book Romance of Transgression in Canada: Queering Sexualities, Nations, Cinemas, Canadian academic Thomas Waugh proposed the form BLLAGTITTISQQ, which would rearrange the letters of the "alphabet soup" into an order that would actually be pronounceable as a word.
LGBTQQICAPPF2K: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Curious, Asexual, Agender, Ally, Pansexual, Polysexual, Friends And Family, 2-Spirit, Kink

Interesting. I don't know anyone within the community who refers to the Q as questioning.
-
I thought it stood for "quotient."
As in who's on top, and who's on bottom.
-
Queer is actually a designation used by a subset of homosexuals. In fact, they even have a TV program on Netflix. Queer Eye it is called. Queer is also a word that is OK to use by certain factions of human critters and frowned upon if use by others.

My wife and I do, and the term is primarily used by teenagers and young adults, in our experience, who are trying to figure out which road they will be traveling on. Primarily women, interestingly enough.

Silly people. To be all inclusive one must use all of the letters. Hell, it has already been organized into a well know order.

Interesting, I wonder if perhaps it's regional. Here and the online places I haunt I've only ever seen it reference queer.

The fact that this is "pushback" is proof that the 'Q' actually does -- has, historically -- mean "queer." People don't "push back" against things they don't have a problem with. The fact that a small percentage of the LGBTQ is "pushing back" doesn't change the fact that it was the LGBTQ community itself that started calling themselves the "LGBTQ" community.
