In connection with a research project, I've been reading some of The Anti-Federalist papers, from the time when our Constitution was being written and debated. The Anti-Federalist Papers were the essays that argued against the form of government we have. They are less well-known than The Federalist papers (which argued for the government we now have) -- probably because history is written by the winners.
Some of those Anti-Federalist writers were flippin' prescient. Reading through some of those papers, and looking at what's happening today, is scary. We are seeing is just what they predicted would happen.

"We have given you a Republic, Ma'am. If you can keep it."

How many of those writers thought it would take well over 200 years for that stuff to happen?

I don't know, and they didn't say.
If you want to look up The Anti-Federalist Papers, take a look at numbers 7, 8, 9, 19, 29 (Part 1 and 2), 51, and 84.
Unfortunately, my "name brand" ancestor came down on the wrong side of history. He was a Federalist.

She demanded the vote and then used it to corrupt the republic.
