Quick! Call Jimmy Carter!
Can't remember who she was, but I saw a talking head 'Iran expert' on the news earlier. Interesting stuff she was saying, there are rumours that Khamenei is sick and that there are power struggles taking place throughout the system. That includes the Revolutionary Guards, who at times operate on their own whim.
There are. Secular movements, amoung the youth especially, are making headway. The mullahs are trying to maintain the status quo. Iran basically has two militaries, the IRGC and the 'regular' military. They are in no way joint. The IRGC wants to expand their operations, especially in Iraq. Information on the Qods Force is very lacking. The regular military is keeping out of most of the politics, but that could change in a heart beat. Things are a bit unstable.
Only thing is, folks have been proclaiming the fall of the theocratic regime any day now for decades. Doubtful, but possible. The only thing most folks agree upon is that an invasion or overt military action would unify the country. Even the reformists and secularists have very much agreed that they'd immediately set aside differences in event of US invasion.
