Title: Active weather the last few days
Post by: Brad Johnson on May 18, 2021, 03:01:50 PM
It's that time of year again ... 'nader season on the plains. Last two days have been average active for this time of year.

Got clear video of a textbook LP supercell just west of the house. It keep dropping funnels the whole time it was around. Slow-mover, too. We watched it for a good half hour before it went over.

Biggest surprise came with the hail. We were outside looking at clouds and I heard SWMBO say "that was hail!". Turned to go back in the house and a piece of 1" hail whacked me square on top of the foot. Stung like a beeotch.

According to our rain gauge, we've had just under 3" of rain in the last 36 hours.

Yesterday afternoon our thermometer was reading 81*, weatherman said it was supposed to have gotten down to 32* over night - I didn't stay up to verify.

The good thing is, the pond is full.  The bad is that I can see the grass growing, and we're not mowing any time soon.

We've had over 3" of rain in the last 4 days. That's unusual, because our average annual precipitation is around 12".

I don't remember where I got it, but I used to have one of those old-fashioned metal protective helmets for workers.  I used it as my hail hat, to go button the place up when it started to hail.  But man, the noise of hail hitting it was impressive.

With a bunch of moves and a divorce and this and that, I  lost track of it.  Probably a collector's item and worth a little bit.

I once went out after some really foul weather to check my rain gauge and found a small fish in it.  No kidding, but nobody believes me.

Last year my car took about 6k in hail damage in an hour. That's what inspired me to get a place with a garage.
