I thought there was a passage in Jeff Cooper's writings in which he opined on the pronunciation of "carbine." If I recall correctly, he was among the elect (CAR-byne). But I cannot find it online (or on-leen).
Anyone know?

You are correct. He stated in the beginning of an article he wrote in guns and ammo in 1966 the only correct pronunciation. And he was opinionated and precise in proper diction.
He was an interesting man. I had a beer with him once upon a time in a tent in Barry Illinois. We talked of 1911s of course.

From looking into this most crucial of topics, I have learned that some sources identify "CAR-bean" as American, and "CAR-bine" as British. When you have Cooper describing the Winchester 94 as "72 years old come Michelmas," it sheds some light on his choice of pronunciation...

Car-bean would be the default because the word obviously comes from the French word "carabine" of similar meaning. No need to blaze completely new ground.

I have always heard both used pretty interchangeably. I have always said it "carbIne", I guess because that's how I first heard it. It could be I first heard it from the Colonel. I read a lot of his stuff in my teen years.

I "know" both are acceptable.
But Car- BEAN is wrong. Every time I hear it, I cringe inside.

I always called it a sarbinay.
E.g., "I attended that slass on sooking a soufflay and got a beautiful Kertifisate of Sompletion."
So it should be spoken of as the “U.S. Sarbinay Semiautomatic Saliber .30 M1.”

The struggle is real.
I came across a source that claimed to have studies or polls that showed younger people say "car-byne," allegedly because they first heard it or saw it in video games that pronounce it that way. (Not true in my case.)
