Apparently it happens fairly often because there are a few video compilations of them.
I take a perverse interest in them for probably deep-seated psychopathological reasons.

Just the thought of how much reverse thrust is needed even in a slow collision --or they look slow in the vids.
Theoretically, ship's Captains are qualified for "Any vessel, any waters."

Credentials are broken down by both tonnage and near coastal vs ocean waters.

It is less than hilarious when you are in one. 3am and you wonder what idiot fell asleep and hit the collision alarm by accident. And then a Big Bang...
Suffice it to say that when seaman Timmy hit the chemical alarm in the Persian gulf and passed no word that it was an accident for damn near an hour I was happily sucking rubber. With a canister that most people didn’t get issued.

It's pretty bad when you can see it coming too. All three anchors out and dragging as you watch the other guy go under the bow.

I am one of two APS members that was present for the creation of the CVN-71 class when we backed over our plane guard cruiser. It’s like a Nimitz class just a bit shorter with one less point defense gun.

I also get all excited when they lose an anchor chain.. This also happens often enough that there are collections of these events.
