I was at a Chinese buffet a few years back that ran out of crab legs. It was pretty intense for a few minutes.

What?

No one went swimming in the chocolate fountain?

I'm beginning to fear for civilized society.

Pre-covid response: Golden Corral is still around?

Post-covid response: How did they not all immediately die from the covids?

I wonder if they only have a few pieces left and there was a fight over that.

There was a one of those near me a few years ago.  Closed down I think before the COVID stuff started.  I can't remember if it was Golden Corral or Ryan's (same thing).  The steak was not good enough to fight over.  You could do just as well at home on your skillet.  The only reason I would eat there occasionally (years ago) is I could eat a plate of veggies and then pig out on bad stuff.

These days I would rather eat a small amount of good food than pig out on average food.

No cats out back?

They have been in business so long there are almost no dogs or squirrels in the area.

Never actually made it to Golden Corral - each time I considered going I read the reviews on Yelp or some other site, and there always seemed to be something along the lines of " . . . people let their kids stand by the chocolate fountain, stick their dirty fingers in, and then lick the chocolate off, over and over . . . "

No. Just . . . no.

There is no way in hell I would ever use the chocolate fountain but the chocolate pie and soft serve ice cream was good. The lunch/dinner stuff sucked. They do a pretty good breakfast buffet.

But the worst part about Golden Corral is the price. It’s $20 a person ($15 buffet, $3 drink plus tax!) to eat there. $20 for crappy buffet food.

I’m not much of a fan of buffets anyway as I have found extremely few good ones that are worth the price.

^^^I am a fan of a good buffet as found at the good Las Vegas hotels, casinos, or a high-end cruise ship.  I have found it difficult to find one elsewhere, and COVID has pretty much put an end to the casino buffets in this area.  There is not a Golden Corral or Old Country Buffet for hundreds of miles here.

There was no internet or chocolate fountains when we had a Golden Corral around here.

I’ve seen a few around, never ate at one.

We also have some remnants of Western Sizzlin’s down here in the southeast, most are terrible. Extended family dragged me to one that was worse than the buffet seen in National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation. https://youtu.be/TDYw9cFhUeQ

We don't have them in Iowa, but I always remember the cultural reference to them.

Iowa has Golden Corral, Bonanza and Sirloin Stockade (aka Bum Steer). I don't ever remember any of them having quality food, but they were a cheap all you can eat extended salad bar.

The one that was here had weekday lunch pricing that was around $8 plus drink.  Steak wasn't available during those times.  At dinner or on weekends it was more like the pricing you mention.  The lunch pricing made it a good alternative to fast food.  Outside of that it wasn't worth it.

Sirloin Stockade

Wow, I haven't heard that name in ages. The only one I knew of was in Rolla MO, 25 years ago, and apparently it's still there.

Must be a Midwest chain.

Nope Oklahoma based, and there aren't any more in Iowa. It has gone the way of the Bishop's Buffet here.

When I was in elementary school, maybe into high school, there was a Bonanza not far from us - and it was GOOD. I mean, REALLY good. But eventually they changed and the price went up as the quality went down, and of course it closed. Ate at a Sirloin Stockade once in Iowa . . . and it was OK. Couple of years later we tried one in Austin, TX - and after one bite each of us spit the food into our napkins and we got up and left, never to return.

As for buffets . . . there was a really good "smorgasbord" buffet just outside of Chicago when I was in school called House of Norway. We went there a lot - it was so good that in high school sometimes we went there before or after a movie on date night, and nobody complained. Everyone liked it. But it changed, lost business, and eventually closed.

When I was doing a lot of traveling - Ponderosa's breakfast buffet was the way to go. BACONZ! All the BACONZ!

And so on...

I only hit one breakfast buffet in Vegas - The Orleans, because they didn't mind truckers sleeping in the parking lot. And it was VERY good.

I went to GC with Mtnbrk and his wife years ago... Their oldest (now in college) was in an infant carrier, so it's pushing 20 years ago.

Food was OK. I didn't expect the Palm. I didn't touch the chocolate fountain, of course (I'd be shocked if they still had it up and running in Covidworld). The ham was really good, the fried fish and fried shrimp were OK, and IIRC the meatloaf was REALLY good.

FTFY

I used to like a good buffet but as the manners and morals of the general public decayed I liked them less and less. There are some seriously nasty mother *expletive deleted*ers out there in public doing their best to share their nasty.  [barf]
About the only buffets left around my area are Chinese places and those are just as suspect on hygiene and sanitation as anything.

My favorite Chinese buffet is the Joy Luck Buffet here in Brentwood, one of the suburbs of STL City...

They KNOW how to hurt you with spices... If you ain't sweating, it ain't good. Past four or five years, did Jewish Christmas there with some friends.
