Title: A poor excuse for prepping, but heck...
Post by: Bogie on October 29, 2022, 12:08:06 AM
I'm thinking of heading a few blocks over to the Viet and general other-side-of-the-pacific-rim market, and buying a few 25 pound bags of rice.

Any suggestions? Because except for the Indian Basmati stuff, which Dvorak turned me on to back around 1988 or so, I haven't heard of most of them.

Jasmine is our favorite

I used to get a 25 pound bag and that would last about a year, but I don't eat it as much so that's too big a bag.  But I like the Jasmine rice too.  Fluffy enough and it cooks fairly quick.

I get the Jasmine too. There's always some in the pantry, and I have 50lbs in Mylar bags in the disaster/SHTF supplies.

I have always heard that white rice stores better for long term than brown, but if you are using it constantly either would work.

Plus, jasmine rice is excellent for rice pudding.

Instapot or rice cooker. I always have at least 25 lbs of Brown rice too but 6 months on that because the oil in the hull goes rancid. I will seal it up and freeze it. See if an asain lady will follow you home too.

I've heard the same thing.  What I was told it has to do with the brown coating which has some oil in it that can go rancid.
