Wife had total knee replacement yesterday. Since we live in the boonies of NW Illinois and are an hour drive from the surgical center, it was arranged for her to spend the night.
I had to pick her up at 8am exactly.
Weather deteriorating rapidly but got her in the car and home before the worst of the weather.
Got her home and settled. Tough little Norwegian is doing ok.
We had some soup for lunch and I have a nice fire in the fireplace. Watching 3 deer bedded down to wait the storm in the trees west of the house. I have another permit but don’t feel like bothering them.
She walked until I got tired. I feel a nap coming on, hope she feels the same.
We will certainly be snowed in. Tractor has a full tank of diesel with fuel treatment. Engine heater if needed. Have gas for the generator and propane for the catalytic burners.
As long as she doesn’t have any complications we are quite good here.

St Louis started off at 38 degrees this morning, but we're down to 9 degrees now. There's some light snow coming down. I didn't think the roads were too bad when I went to the bank on my lunch hour, but they're sending us home at 2pm. Expected low of -7 tonight, with the weather warming slightly over the weekend.
-
High of 52 yesterday. Five degrees this morning and we might make it to mid teens... if we're lucky.
There isn't a cloud in the sky and it would be a beautiful, sunny, pleasant winter day if it weren't for the wind. Low teens temps driven by a howling 25-30 mph wind is miserable.
Will still be brisk tomorrow, but maybe 5-10 mph winds and low 20 temps so not nearly as bad. Wind is forecast to switch back out of the south sometime very early morning Saturday. Back in the low 30s Saturday, climbing into the 50s by midweek.

48 here now. Suppose to be -5 by morning with a high of 5 tomorrow with 50mph winds.

Had first of 2 surgeries Monday. Stayed at a hotel the night before rather than risk it with the snow that was forecast. Second surgery is tomorrow, with freezing rain set to foul things up. So, doing the hotel thing again tonight.
-
Snow has just started here on the eastern shore of lake michigan. Temperature has dropped 2 degrees in the last 30 minutes.
Let 'er rip.
-
Man, all the fun is to the East of me. We're at 16 right now (it got to 9 just before the sun came up this morning). Clouds are moving in, but they've only bumped the forecast up to maybe 4" of snow over the next couple of days. They've (fingers crossed) bumped the long range forecast down a few degrees, which would change the freezing rain/slush they originally predicted back to snow, which I would much prefer.
Anyways, looks like you guys East of the Rockies are gonna have all the fun. =D

Where'd you get that done, seeing as one might be in my personal future.?

Quad cities. Davenport Iowa. Dr Hoffman has done about 800 of the robotic assist surgeries and also teaches the method.
It’s amazing how much different it is since I had my TKR 6 years ago.

Gonna drop like mad

My lady friend in Butte had -27 on her thermometer this morning, not quite as bad as the -40 the weather guessers predicted. Right now (2 PM Butte time) it's a balmy -16. Some other city in Montana saw a 27 degree drop in 3 minutes - pretty strong front.
Temps in Austin, TX are dropping - they were in the 50's early, but have just dropped below freezing and are on their way to the mid teens. No snow predicted.
My cousins said it's begun snowing and temperatures are falling in Chicago - they're predicting a blizzard with strong winds, and said it may be like the infamous Big Snow of January 1967, but without the accumulation. (Which makes no sense - it was the accumulation that MADE it the Big Snow. I remember drifts up to our garage gutters and being able to walk over our 4' chain link fence in places.) Chicago temps should be in the single digits below zero overnight.
The funniest story had the current weather guesser on the local NBC affiliate comparing the air pressure of this bomb cyclone going through the middle of the country to a Cat 2 or Cat 3 hurricane.
-
Here 50 miles north of Seattle, we have seven inches of snow on the ground and at 0900, the temp was 7.3 degrees, which is very unusual for this area. It has warmed up to 19 degrees as of 1300. I shudder to think of the electric bill this month, since the heat pump has been running the auxiliary heating strips in the air handler.
Freezing rain is predicted tonight which will ice up the roads but good.

35F this am on the way to work, down to 7 now. Enough blowing snow to make things slippery, but not enough to bother with shoveling. Snowmageddon has not impressed so far.
-
It's gonna snow, it's not gonna snow, it's gonna snow, it's not gonna snow. Winds going to blow a bunch, but it's not really. The only accurate parts of the forecast for us has been the rain and low temps. It's supposed to get down to single digits at night over the next couple of days, but be cold and clear during the daytime.

Man, my part of Idaho must be in the eye of this thing. I can't believe you guys got so much snow already.
My heat pump hasn't turned on at all today. It's all been the propane aux furnace because the temps are so low. Not that the propane bill will be any great shakes. I lit the wood stove a couple of hours ago, so the heater will probably stay off the rest of the day now.

VERY brisk gusts here every now and then.
-
It has been below zero since sundown yesterday, -11F all day and a WNW at 25mph with gusts up to 45mph. A couple inches of snow fell. Just nasty cold out there.
-
Didn’t really get all that much snow but temps have dropped from 27+ to sub zero headed to -11
-
Woke up about 5:00 to pee, temps was 40° F, went back to bed.
Got up at 7:30 and temp was 12°F. We got 2-3" of dry, fluffy snow and the temp has continued to drop all day. We are now at -1°F.

Denver near foothills.

Stocked up Monday and Wednesday on POP (Power Outage Provender for the MMAU {Military Minds Among Us}.)
I figured high winds and cold-tautened and embrittled power lines boosted the risk a bit. Made an extra pot of coffee for storage in the 'fridge --I prefer cold coffeee anyway. Nice thing about outages in the cold is you can store perishables outside pro tem.
Noticed this afternoon with the snow on the pasture west of me that the house is really bright from reflection. They recently cut down a slew of dead trees outside my windows which were blocking that view, so now sunlight comes in, and with it bouncing off snow intead of grass, it's really bright in here. Probably will be muy heisser next summer sans the trees.
Settled in, got some stuff to do on line and by 'phone.
Puh-lenty of warnings about driving, a lot of places closed, and one tip I heard was to put a dinner plate under your candles. The pity of it is it's probably a necessary caution.
Good luck to youse guys and yours'n.

It was in the high 60's down here on the Gulf Coast at Noon. Weather app shows 39 F locally now. Supposed to be freezing by 10 PM and down to 19 F in the morning. Thankfully no rain so far.

Had an email from a friend in Cascade, Montana, reporting -40 last night. She said she has never experienced anything that cold.

Has anyone blamed
global cooling global warming climate change yet?

My desktop weather thingee says minus 5 right now, so it kind-a is.

^ Maybe you should go outside where it's probably warmer than by your desk.
(High school Freshman level but somebody had to do it and I drew the short straw.)
-
I plan on being full of anti-freeze for the rest of the evening.
-
35 to 22 in less than 45 minutes
-
According to the damned hippies at Weather Underground, it is -4 outside. Inside, I'm at 64. Will probably crank on the propane heater for about a half an hour, and hit the rack after I shut it down.
I did some work on the windows, doors, etc., and the house is much happier this year than last.

12 now
10 degree drop every hour since 7:30

Hopefully the temperature will be positive sometime tomorrow.

We’re not getting above 0 ambient in SW Ohio until 2100 hours tomorrow eve. Wind chill will still be below 0.
High of 54 on Wednesday next week….smh

We hit -11 last night. Forecast is a high of -1 today.
Luckily we didn’t got the 6” of snow. What we did get is blowing like mad but manageable.
I just brought another wheelbarrow of firewood down from the woodshed. I’ll burn a couple wheelbarrows full today I’m sure.
Propane tank is 80% on a thousand gallons. Winter is outside but it’s nice here inside.
Wife had a pretty rough night last night with swelling and pain and I was up with her a lot but the tough little Norwegian is doing pretty well.
Township plow truck came by once but I wouldn’t want to have to go anywhere.

I made kugelis yesterday. Turned out great - as always. (Shared some with the neighbor lady - she liked it. Even commented that the bacon added good flavor - and she's Jewish.)
Fried some up for breakfast this morning. =D Home made chicken soup is on the menu for lunch. Good food and drink is a good way of dealing with snowmageddon events.

For those of you with electric stoves to cook up that good stuff, I hope you have power.
(I never heard of a gas line being blown down by the wind. Or a tree falling on one.)
-

Yep, electric here.
My biggest worry was the wind knocking the power out, thankfully it didn't even blink. I was prepared just in case.

18f, feels like 5f according to Weather Underground. That ain't rite...
-
Currently 50F at home, but windy.

Got a reconditioned battery for $45 about two weeeks ago for a backup. Sitting outside (in the car, on my balcony) for all that time, cold-soaking at or below zero for two days.
No charging, no warming, this morning voltage was 12.6 --ie, nominal full-charge after resting from a charge.
Good deal for 45 bucks, a pleasant surprise.
I have a small 12VDC-to-110VAC inverter I have used to get on line with about ten years ago during a bad outage.
Useful for charging USB stuff too.

House temperature was at 54 when I woke up and crawled out of bed for covfefe around 10ayem...
Fired up the propane heater, and the kitchen office is now at 70, with the living room and bedroom cooler. Shut it down, gonna see how long it takes to drop under 60...

I'm at Castle Key's place in coastal central Virginia.
High was this morning, around 45 degrees. The wind picked up pretty good a few hours ago as the front started pushing in. Had about 20 minutes of monsoon rain around 10:30, now it's absolutely clear, windy as hell, and 36. The low tonight is still forecast to be 11, and tomorrow won't go above freezing.
The winds should die down around 5 to 6 pm. If the power goes out, the generator will kick in. Right now, the plan is to sit on my ass in the TV room and, when it gets chilly, turn on the gas fire and cuddle up with one of the 4 Leonbergers who are currently are site.
Last Christmas it was cold down here, but the day before I was going to head home we had about 4 inches of snow that ended up closing I-95 for over 24 hours because the Democratic Governor couldn't make up his mind how to do anything about it.
Of course, the people who were losing their freaking minds over the government inaction were blaming Goveror Youngkin.... who wouldn't take office for another 2 weeks.
The left is really *expletive deleted*ing dumb.

Agreed, to add: Dumb enough to be led around by the nose by some very smart amoral leaders. With money.

Dropped to -7 last night, it's back up to zero. Still windy. Still not enough new snow to worry about, but I did shovel a path through the drift on the steps to go get the mail. Yay, property tax bill.

My mobility scooter ran out of juice while the wife were out a bit ago, she was using it while I stayed in the SUV. BARELY made it back to the car!

I went out for another wheelbarrow full of firewood before dark. It’s blowing so hard I almost couldn’t stand up in the wind. We never got above -2 today.
The only vehicle going past all day was the township plow truck.
Wind is just screaming over us like a banshee and we are tucked down in a wooded valley and somewhat sheltered.
-
My oldest was willing to brave the cold (it was around -7 at the time) for some sledding. We ran down the pipeline on the ATV and kicked up some deer who were keeping to the valley to stay out of the wind.
-
-1 here. Biggest thing this week and last weeks storm has been vertical climate. Last two days was rain here at 2000 ASL but the ridges I cross to get to work were all ice. Lots of minor tree problems when the wind picked up. I took the scenic route home from work last saturday on a forest service road to the highest spot in the area. Inch of ice on the road but the last fell as sleet so some texture. Ruins the day of Jeep bros doing Jeep things when a ford focus rolls by.

Weather gurus said we'd get 18-24 inches of snow here in south central W. Michigan about 25 miles inland from Lake Michigan. As of this moment, I'd say about 10 inches, though they were mostly right about temps; we were in low single digits and -16 from windchill. Winds were steady enough to wiggle trees that are bare of leaves with some fairly hefty gusts of blowing snow. That caused some drifting. Winds are out of the W and NW. The east side of my house has a waist high drift on my deck and the lower patio has one maybe 18 inches with some beauts hanging off the roof on that side.
Supposed to calm down tonight and I'm going out around 8PM to do the 5th snow blow of my drive since 9PM Thursday night, 2 yesterday and 1 this morning. It's always smart to stay ahead of potentially heavy snow or drifting.
Merry Christmas to all of you.......ummmm....whatever yin'z are.

I get nowhere near the snowfall that you do, but I have certainly learned that shoveling twice during a snowstorm is twice as easy as shoveling once. =)
-
The cold snap is finally breaking here in Virginia.
Today it's going to barely get above freezing. Still pretty chilly out, though, but at least the wind has died down.
By the end of this coming week it's going to be pushing 60.
-
As a final gift as the storm exits my AO, we got freezing rain last night. We have a good layer of ice over the snow now to where while on patrol just now, the dawg sounded like a galloping buffalo as he ran through it.
All the concrete surfaces that I shoveled yesterday are now an ice slick. I usually just wear my insulated muck boots most of the Winter, but had to break out the Kamiks this morning so I wouldn't fall on my ass.
We're supposed to have multiple days of warm fronts moving through starting tomorrow night, with decent rain and highs in the 40s.
-
On a side note, I just exchanged Christmas greetings with an old friend in Cali, who told me his area is at 80deg with Santa Ana winds blowing. For those not familiar, Santa Anas are an adiabatic hot wind that blows down from the mountains to the coast, usually around 20-40mph, and just makes for some miserable dry heat. I have experienced many a "Santa Ana" (or "Sundowner", in Santa Barbara) Christmas, and will happily deal with ice on the ground instead. =)
-
We're supposed to be in the 70s by mid week.
Talked to my lady friend in Butte - they're 35 today. Still a bit chilly, but that's 70 degrees warmer than it was a few days ago.
Oh, and one of her neighbors has 2 kids - teenage boys - who were going for haircuts a couple of days ago. The 16 year old wanted to go wearing short pants, a t-shirt, and sandals . . . with -35 degree temperatures and who knows HOW low the wind chill was. (His Mom said no.)

Mrs. Mush and I went camping up in GA through the storm.
Friday night was nippy in the tent. Mid single digits, but it was in the teens last night. Not too bad.
Not a lot of crowds at the state parks though.

Winter camping can definitely be fun, but this week isn't the ideal conditions.
Still single digit temps, but the wind has dropped off.
