Mr. Gambon replaced the first Dumbledore, Richard Harris, who died after the second Harry Potter movie.

Always got a kick out of Jeremy Clarkson revisiting Gambon's hilariously unhinged Star In A Reasonably Priced Car run on Top Gear.

I first really became aware of Gambon when he played John Harrison in the BBC TV series Longitude. Fantastic show.

Michael Gambon was a great interviewee on Top Gear. Here are the two interview clips on YouTube in the order of his appearances. He is quite funny in the second clip.

My first real exposure to him in a movie was when he played the bad guy on "Open Range", Denton Baxter.

As the NYT is a "restricted" site, here is what IMDB has about this. He was 3 weeks (10/19) from his next birthday. The bio said "complications from pneumonia".
