I was born and raised in Ventura. We used to stop on this street a lot to hit the Mexican joint for lunch when driving back to the office from meetings at the Park Service or Navy base.

Notice the debris and mud in the street? That wasn't the first wave to do that yet they stood there anyway. People are idiots.

Even people who know better do very stupid things. In da UP we were on a winter cross country ski trip and we stopped along Lake Superior to check out the ice along shoreline (very cool btw). A few of the stupid women (one was even a big water kayaker!) that were with us ignored my warnings and walked out onto the ice. I was very adamant and really po'd them.
A few days later one of them wanted to discuss it. I let her know that she endangered all the rest of us because if they fell through shelf ice, us stupid men would feel obligated and try to save them, probably dying ourselves in the process. Falling in the water of Lake Superior in January is probably a death sentence, it doesn't take long for everything to shut down in shock.
That was my last trip with them.
I'm still annoyed by it heh. I almost sent my boss girl, you go girl friend that wanted to talk about it this article last year. Happened not far from me here in Hoosier land.

I wonder if the guy in the truck would feel bad if he ran over somebody while trying to save his vehicle that wasn't in nearly the danger that the idiots on foot were in?

I was thinking along the same lines, then I thought if it were happening to me I might fear that this was going to be a real big one that would wash even me and the truck out to sea!

Yeah, I guess when the water and mud starts hitting the windows your perspective is different than mine while I'm comfortably watching it on a computer, safe from any threat.

Same thing at Pismo Beach. The movie "Clueless" even knew about Pismo Beach disasters, too bad the campers didn't. Pismo Beach Dunes and camping as close to the ocean as you can is what people do. After several days of high tide and high surf warnings they came in and a few campers and trucks didn't make it out.

In relation to the tsunamis that destroyed the Japanese nuclear plant, I read somewhere that there were stone monuments up in the hills warning to not build below that point.
So what causes high waves or "rogue" waves besides underwater quakes and hurricanes? Just an unfortunate combination of random variables?
